Cumberland autoX was a blast!

It was nice seeing Jerry, Tom, Di, Dave, Matthew, April, Ron and his gf as well as meeting a whole bunch of gearheads in the WV/MD area who just love hanging out and racing cool cars!

The course was very fast with quite a few surprises to catch inexperienced autoXers off guard:

I competed in D-Stock in which they were 4 entrants on Saturday. Alan Pozner was in a '00 Intergra Type R on Kumho V710's (he's been to SCCA Nationals for 5 years straight), an Italian dude in a Ferrari shirt was in a VW R32 on r-comps, a guy in a 280ZX and myself. Pozner ran a 58.5, the VW R32 driver a 59.5, I ran a 61.9 (on street tires) and the 280Zx was in the 65+ second range.

Jerry competed in Street Mod and had a few technical issues with Tom's car as the s/c belt was out of alignment with the crank pulley and kept coming off during his runs and taking out the p/s & alternator belt with it. His best was a 64.6 IIRC...

A few pics from the day:

Chike,
Nice! Are you running the larger front swaybar now? Shame you're running 17" rims, I've got a full set of 245/45-16 VictoRacers (two of them brand new!) that I'm going to sell since I'm moving up to 275s

Thanks Bill! Yup, I'm running the 29mm front swaybar which has really taken a bunch of body roll out of my car AND increased front end grip by roughly 15% (rough estimate from my testing on a few backroads).

I have to run 17" rims as they're stock on the '06 WRX. Congrats on moving up to 275! Those things should stick!!!!!

Nice to see your pictures, chike. What was the quickest speed (mph) you achieved in this course?

If you look at the track map I posted, you'll see a section where the grass forms a triangle. This triangle points down to a right-hander. Leading up to that right-hander, I was hitting roughly 6,300rpms in second gear (which is roughly 65mph). Some of the 500hp AC Cobra replicars that were there were hitting over 80mph.

One of the beauties of competing at a non-SCCA sanctioned event!!!

Cool, from the map, it does look like a fast and wide course...so those small and good handling cars can't get alot of advantages??

So did you use 2nd gear all the times(99% of the track?), if you changed strategies and used 3rd, you would probably lose a lot of seconds?

Chike,
I was going to say that the course looked like you could build up some serious speed...you just beat me to it Must be the same course designer from last year -- see they had the loop toward the end again to scrub off speed, along with the hard right hander and the stop box at the end....

I'm pretty sure the course designer was the same as last year's. That stop box was interesting. Some cars literally stopped just inches away from the cone!!!
