Any long term damage using FWD mode?

Anyone know if leaving the trans in FWD mode will do long term damage? Did anyone have a problem when using FWD mode? I know the FWD fuse can be used to diagnose AWD issues and when using the spare tire by disabling the transfer solenoid. Seems to me Subaru wouldn't have put it there if it would damage the transmission right? Please reply with thoughts or experiences. Thanks

Dekidd,

Are you having troubles with your rebuilt?

Subaru does not recommend leaving the fuse there.

The reasons *seem* to be insufficient lubricaton of components (transfer clutch?) and/or potential blockage of passages with debris...

No problems with rebuild. I put the fuse in sometimes because the car is more snappy and gets better gas mileage of course. Maybe I should reconsider and just keep it in AWD.

Good idea to leave it in AWD. As gl1674 says, the transfer valve assy can freeze up. Unless of course you don't want to use the AWD any more.

How bad is your gas mileage now? Short trips of less than 20 minutes are the worse, ~15mpg. Letting the auto trans warm up before driving and accelerating slowly will help. Also syn AFT and front and rear diff syn fluids.

FWD fuse = BAD BAD BAD!! Causes super tranny heating!! It should only be used if you're trying to limp home... I made the mistake of putting in the FWD fuse and it cost me a transmission within a month. BAD IDEA!

I'll stick with AWD from now on. It's not worth risking trans damage. I use Mobil 1 synthetic ATF, about $5 a quart, but worth it though. Thanks for the tips.
