Need help quick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I undid the out hose from my fuel filter and red fluid that looks like transmission fluid dripped out. Is this normal?

Your Fuel filter is ABOVE the motor on the driver's side strut tower, not down below the battery by the radiator, that one is the external tranny filter......I'm guessing that is the one you have removed the hose from.

Yep. I'm an idiot. I put it back together, found the fuel filter and all is well. Should I be concerned about having removed those tranny hoses? Not much leaked out, just a few drips.
BTW. Original fuel filter at 90,000 miles. Hope everybody's enjoying their christmas eve. Last edited by DavieGravy; 12-24-2002 at 03:47 PM. |

Nawww, you're not an idiot, it's a comon mistake......not many cars have an external tranny filter, so it's an honest mistake.
A few drops won't be a problem, glad you got it straightened out. Mine has 155k on probably the original fuel filter........I REALLY should change that put on my mental list tha keeps getting lost Merry Christmas

Is there a way to check the damn dipstick for the tranny fluid without it smearing and being unreadable? Since I lost about a filiter-full of fluid, in addition to another leak that's been occurring, I'm concerned. My shifts seem smoother, almost to the point of not being feelable. Before they were harder. I'd top it off, but I have no idea how much is in there. Does the dipstick need to go in a certain way? Should it be pulled out quickly or slowly? I know the tranny needs to be warmed up.
Thanks in advance and sorry for this not being in TQA. |

there is a cold side to the dipstick as well. I assume this means you can check it cold as well?

I checked it cold (assuming this gives accurate readings) and one of two things might be going on:
1. The thing is WAY full (twice as much fluid in there as there should be) 2. Or it's smearing all over the dipstick and I'm getting false readings. I tried putting in and pulling out the dipstick fast and I tried doing it slow. The fluid is way up there in both situations. When I pulled it out for the first time, the fluid was high up on the stick. On both sides the fluid level makes a clearly defined line. I can take a picture if this will make things easier. You can check it when the fluid is cold....BUT it still has to be running when you check it, start it put it in reverse, then in drive then back to neutral and get out and check it with it running, it's pretty hard to read if you've got clean fluid, but go by which ever side has the lowest showing.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Huck. I did what you said and got a reading between the L and F marks for hot. The car was cold. I think it's ok.
