Has anyone...

Has anyone ever drilled a hole with a circular saw in the ABS shield across the front of the engine so it would be it possible to remove and replace the oil filter without taking "all those bolts" and the dang shield off and putting it back on every-time the oil filter needs changed? Maybe a 5 inch circle? Thanks,

Keith

Re: Has anyone...

Wouldn't see why not. Probably want to fashion some type of removeable cover.
My parent's 02 Durango had something similar from the factory. Plastic undertray with a access hole that a cover that removed by twisting.
I'd get a pic of it, but it fell off at some point of offroading adventures.

Re: Has anyone...

Never thought it of, but I do enjoy taking the shield off and just laying on my back, staring up into the engine and dodging the occasional drip......

it's very relaxing.

Re: Has anyone...

I was going to take mine off, but there seem to be holes and/or a channel or something right underneath where the filter is, and all the oil came out of one small hole for me. Either a coincidence, or Subaru, yet again, thought of something smart. :]

Re: Has anyone...

Am I really the only one skinny enough that I just slide under the car without jacking it up and reach up around the under cover to get to the oil filter??

Re: Has anyone...

My concern is not getting the filter off without removing the shield but having a way to remove the filter without getting any oil on the shield.

If I cut the hole I can handle the oil. If I take the SVX to a shop to get an oil change, they do it without taking the shield off... or leave half the bolts out. Always, a big mess!
Not acceptable in my world.

Thanks for all the input and ideas.
I am doing it!
