speed sensor

what would happen if my #2 speed sensor (on front diff) went bad? same question applies to the #1 sensor (extension case).

If the No.2 goes out, the shift points may happen at odd times, the speedo will not operate.

If No.2 goes out, it may not shift at all. Or the AWD clutch may be applied at the wrong times, binding or front wheel spin.

The TCU will try to use which ever sensor is working to continue changing gears, but it can't detect wheel spin without two working sensors.

Harvey.

then the possibility of bad speed sensor wouldn't be an answer to why my car starts out in 2nd gear. i've tested my dropdown resistor and it reads about 12 ohms resistance. i e-mailed smallcar to see what their shift kit resistor should be. before i had the tranny rebuilt i had the same problem and changed the solenoid pack but that didn't do it. i'm going crazy here trying to figure the problem out. i'll change the tcu to a used one hopefully by the end of next week and after that i don't know where else to look.

any other ideas?

The only thing that starts out in 2nd is the Manual snow function. If you select 1st, does it show 1st on the dash and start in 1st or 2nd.?

Well I doubt it is a gear box problem, it uses the forward clutch for 1st, and the forward clutch and the band for 2nd, so the forward clutch has to be OK to drive in 2nd.

It would have to be in the TCU I would think. Unless the manual wiring is holding it in manual function. Try a different TCU, if that does not fix it, it may be in the wiring. I assume it does get 3rd and 4th?

the transmission was completely rebuilt as of 1 week ago. the only thing that hasn't been changed is the computer. i have one on it's way and will be trying it hopefully end of next week. if that doesn't work i suppose it'll just have to be the presttyest driveway ornament on the block.

OK hold out for the TCU, all the shift solenoids have to be working, otherwise it would stay in 3rd.

All the best, till then you have the slowest SVX off the line,

Harvey.
