Radar Detector reception
I wanted to get the Valentine 1,after hearing good things from customers at my job about it,but am a little leary seeing as how the windshield has a bronze tint, and my other windows have 35%.I usually wouldn't think twice, but the detector I curently own seems to peg out on the laser band sometimes with the throttle,it can actually be used as a digital tach, the further I depress the gas,the higher up the laser band goes.I know I'm not crazy, but I don't know if a control unit in the car is giving off some funky signal,or the bronze tint is affecting it,or what.......has anyone else experienced this wierd issue?

The LS-L and LSi models have a Ti coating on the windshield to reflect some light. It also pretty good at stopping radar signals, so radar detectors are not as effective.

Yes, and it isn't just radar that is affected.

My radar detector reception is cut by half, in the SVX (as compared with the family van), due to the Ti coating. Fortunately, my GPS (Delorme Blue Logger) works fine . . . after it finally acquires a sat or two.
I don't understand why the detector would be reacting to engine speed, unless there's a glitch in your charging system that's causing it, and your R/D is acting like something of an Ampmeter while plugged into the lighter circuit.

Gentlemen,
Please forgive me. But in the interest of accuracy, I must submit the following. The coating in the windshield is not Ti. Ti is Titanium, which is a metal, it is not transparent, and you can't see thru it. The coating in the windshield is TiO, which is Titanium Oxide (rusty titanium ). This is a fine transparent coating and you can see thru it. This coating stops UV rays and other non-visible wave lengths. Also, in an emergency nuclear 'event', you can hide under the SVX dash and hope for the best.

I have a V1 in my svx and it does cut reception with the window coating but I don't get any wierd signals or anything like you were describing.
Those GMC trailblazers with their stupid tailights that set off the laser warning - I wish I could set fire to the guy who made those.

Is there a way to rub the coating off, like in the spot where my alarm antenna is?

No problems here with my Passport 8500 and non-TiO coated L model windshield. Sometimes it pays to have the "cheap" model!
Dave PS I HIGHLY recommend the 8500. Excellent range and sensitivity |

There is someone (bel or maybe passport, I know same company now) who makes a remote mount unit, where the reciever is mounted someplace under the hood, and the display is mounted some place inside the vehicle (obviously). One of the guys I work with bought one for his WRX, I'll check with him tomorrow and see who makes it and how he likes it.
Ok, found 2 "cheap" units, one is a Whistler the other a Bel, you can get them off ebay and not have to pay the $300-500 price tag that is the msrp. I'll still check with my buddy and see which one he got, how he likes it and what he paid for it.
