Ebay question/issue

I bought a motorcycle jacket off ebay. Just an old polyester spring jacket. Nothing heavy or anything like that. Ending price was $30 (I was the only bidder). Got an invoice from the seller for $65. $35 for shipping a jacket that weighs what 2 lbs from SD to PA???? I sent an email asking him how he was planning to ship it and all. Have heard nothing for 4 days. What would you do? Is there any recourse through ebay for charging outrageous S&H. Even if the seller was taking it to a Mailboxes ETC. to send It would be less than that with them packing the thing. I don't mind at all paying for handling as most people tend to forget sellers must box and tape up things which can get pricey but $35???

eBay doesn't regulate S&H charges. The seller can charge whatever he wants. The worst that can happen is you don't pay for the jacket and he leaves you negative feedback. I would try and email him again asking about the charges. If he doesn't answer within a day or two get his contact info from eBay and call him. If you don't know how just click on the search icon at the top of the page, then click on find members. You will have to enter his user name and the item number. eBay will then email you the contact info they have on him.
Sometimes it helps when you talk to someone instead of emailing back and forth.

Wink

Obviously it's being shipped via Tahiti. I paid 5 bucks for shipping a Nissan Radiator to my door - UPS 3 day delivery.
No way I'd pay $30 bucks for a jacket unless Catherine Zita-Jones showed up wearing it.

Ron.

Those outrageous S&H charges are a 'legit' scam that some sellers use.

For example, take a look at any 'grounding kit' for the SVX on Ebay - you see prices of around $16.99-$19.99 for a unit. However, if you look at S&H charges, they are for the same amount as the item you are buying!

Sellers have to list the S&H upfront on their auctions, but these charges aren't listed until you get to the bottom of the auction and are often written in light gray lettering.

Just be wary in the future...

It is rare that a seller lists S&H in an amount. This auction just says see item description for shipping and handling instuctions. There is nothing there. I've never had a problem on ebay. Til now I guess.

While I've never purchased anything on eBay, I have looked at a lot of items. I've never seen a sale that did not have a shipping chargelisted at teh bottom of the page. I was always under the impression that eBay rules stated you had to show upfront what shipping charges will be for any item auctioned.

You found one of the potential pitfalls of buying through eBay. I've bought a number of items, and I have avoided buying from some vendors when they charged outrageous shipping fees. In example, I've bought replacement batteries and cases, etc. for our family's cell phones and have seen shipping charges anywhere from 'Free' to $15.00 for items that weigh only a matter of ounces. You've got to weigh the shipping charges against the 'bid' amount and look at total cost to put it on your doorstep. (Where's the bargain in paying $5.00 for the $10.00 item if you have to pay $15.00 to ship it?)

Sometimes it works in your favor. I just bought a set of 17x7 OEM 'take-off' alloy wheels for my wife's Land Rover Freelander on eBay for use as spares so she can have 'winter' and 'summer' rubber. I managed to win the auction for a whole $102.50 and the seller is only charging me about $40. to ship all four rims(!?).

As they say, let the buyer beware.

-Mark

I've sold many things on ebay and I have never had to list s&h upfront. I always wait until the buyer wins and gives me his address to get actual s&h charges.

I've never bought anything on Ebay that didn't have the S&H charges listed upfront...but I believe you. I'm sure some sellers find anyway to lure people into bidding on their stuff!
