Tappets and additives. Crock?
Gidday all fellas and fellases
Got a bit of a bad tappet rattle in the old girl (the SVX that is), I'm sure they have gotta be hydraulic, so this probably doesn't bode well for me. Any one used any "additives" successfully in this sort of situation?? Engine tool-box in can sort of things - which I always scoff at. They are advertising something called "XR-1" here at the moment, seems that the space shuttle launcher platform uses it. Whadaya reakon, another crock?? Have any SVXérs out there used any of this sort of stuff (with good results??) Cheers all and good driving

Change oil and put a quart of MMO ( marvel Mystry Oil ) in it run it till it quits taping ( probably about a week ..... Depending on how many miles you can run and how long a period of time )
and then change oil again and put half a quart of MMo in it. |

Gotsubarus, someone once told me that Marvel Mystery Oil is nothing more than ATF. Is that a crock?
Thanks, Matt

I believe Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) is mostly kerosene (or perhaps parafin for our UK readers).
I would go here. Do a search, perhaps just in the additives section, and see if any products are available in your neck of the woods. MMO gets good opinion ratings, but not much good from the techies that frequent the site. Pay attention to posts from Molakule. He's either a research chemist in the auto industry or a tribologist (I forget). http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi |

before your next oil change, dump a quart of ATF in, drive the snot out of the car for about 30 miles, then change the oil. worked like a charm for my 928 which sat for a few months in the winter. these cars would get the noise when they sat for a while, but the ATF trick always worked for me.

A couple of my friends have used MMO with good results. I'd try it.

Sounds interesting all. ATF, hmmm - (does that mean my car will grow a 4WS appendage)??
MMO sounds ok, but we've never heard of it here. The old girl will be sitting for a couple of years now too, I'm going back to work on the oil rigs. Should I be storing her with any particular requirements? Matt

I would put some stabilizer in the fuel, maybe spray some fogging oil into each cylinder, and raise it up on blocks to get the weight off the suspension and tires.

Good thread this has been on my mind.
Have you used Marvel Mystry Oil in the gas tank? It says this can be done on the bottle. I have heard from an old German mechanic that using AFT in the gas tank is a good thing. It gives the engine more power (?) and helps it last longer. Is MMo really tranny fluid? Is it the Dexron type or the type F? Does it matter? Lastly, the Subaru XT-6 would get noisy lifters when the oil pump become worn. Something to keep in mind with high mileage (100k) engines.

yes, it's a subject that doesn't come up very often SVX_commuter!! My oil pump shouldn't be too bad at only 95K, but you never know I guess.
Most people I think, tend to take most of these additives with a pinch of salt, but there seem to be a few good stories out there, like the lads with their PS additives and such. So, has anyone heard of this X-1R stuff?? Matt
