what to drive - part 3

well it's time for another road trip and even though i'm pretty sure which car i'll be driving, i'd like to open up a poll because they're fun.

hubby and i are driving from littleton, co to cadillac, mi for and back next week to attend his cousin's wedding. we will be picking up hubby's sister in chicago, il and taking her back on our way home.

here are the pros and cons of each vehicle choice:

pros:

svx - it's an svx!
elantra gt - great gas mileage, iPod headunit, and comfortable leather seats
elantra gls - great gas mileage, cool cloth seats
grand cherokee - good view of the road, infinity gold stereo system, comfy seats

cons:

svx - fair gas mileage, loud snow tires, aging oem stereo, two doors
elantra gt - hot leather seats (not a con for teh svx)
elantra gls - not so comfortable cloth seats, cassette player adaper for iPod
grand cherokee - horrible gas mileage, cloudy headlight covers, cracked windshield

It depends. Taking off the snows would tilt the scales immediately. You probably drive any of those choices everyday, so why not consider renting something interesting - maybe 'over the top' even? I used to know more than a couple ways to rent exotics in Denver - from their owners, not dealers/agencies. Wouldn't that be a hoot? Pricey - yes, but sometimes we're worth spending a few bucks on ourselves, dammit!

You can rent a Jag or Porsche almost anywhere. A few well-placed calls could yield a Ferrari or Lambo... $$$$ but the WooHoo! factor is, well, WooHoo!

Cross country in an Elantra? That's not a trip, that's a sentence!

Why don't you fly out there? Gas will cost you more than round trip plane tickets.

Def. the Jeep or elantra...don't put miles on the SVX....and besides...its a hyundai, so its worth ragging on with some miles and roadtripping....

i can't justify spending any more on this trip than necessary.all of my spare money this summer is going towards landscaping (or hoa fines if i don't get it done soon ).

and you'd be surprised by the newer hyundais. the leather seats are in the gt are extremely comfortable (far more comfy than in the legacy 2.5gt i traded in for it). for $12K, i couldn't have made a better choice in a new car.

have you tried to fly to a small airport before? there are no non-stop flights to traverse city or midland-bay city-saginaw. round-trip airfare was almost $400 per person and i'd still have to rent a car while we were there. my buddy works for frontier arilines and we could have got stand-by round trip tickets to chicago midway or detroit for $55 each, but that still meant renting a car and having to park one of ours at the airport for over a week at $10/day. driving was the really the cheapest alternative. i have a lifetime average of about 36 mpg in my hyundai.

take the svx....The loud snow tires are probably not that loud....so what? Crank up the stereo!... As for gas mileage...You've probably got the funny needle like we all do...You could probably get 400+ miles on a tank of gas..bring a small can of gas with you if you worry about it. I drove my svx 600 miles without any problems and it's got 130k on it. There's your answer.
