footnote

Regarding replacement on my car, the left bearing and seal set was from Subaru (gratis, from the dealership), and the right came from NAPA. Both were installed by the same guy. It'll be interesting to see which side goes first (a couple o' hundred thousand miles from now).

bearings

Does this failure rate reflect an actual failure or just replacement for preventative maintenence? Damn I felt that another gray hair, no this time two.

Both of the rear bearings on my car were roaring when I bought my car at 75K miles. Replaced both, and now up to 25K miles with no problems.

Seems that the 92 SVX's are the ones with the most problems.

Sorta. You have to take in a few factors before you come to any conclusions... First off, 92s are most numerous. Secondly, 92s are by far the cheapest SVXs, which means a few things: 1. Younger people will be able to afford them. 2. Generally younger people are more computer savy, and are more likely to come to this website and vote in these polls.

Hence, who knows. Interesting poll, but I doubt you could come to anything conclusive.

Just look at it percentage wise

1992 SVX w/ no bearing failure 10
1992 SVX w/ bearing failure 16
- 62% failure
1994 SVX w/ no bearing failure 2
1994 SVX w/ bearing failure 1
- 33% failure
1995 SVX w/ no bearing failure 1
1995 SVX w/ bearing failure 5
- 83% failure
1996 SVX w/ no bearing failure 1
1996 SVX w/ bearing failure 2
- 67% failure
1997 SVX w/ no bearing failure 1
1997 SVX w/ bearing failure 0
- 0% failure

A percent is a percent - so volume drops from the equation, but you still have to keep in mind most '92's will have higher miles so we will probably see more failures and I will never buy a '95 now. 83% yikes

Go buy a Ferarri, cheaper to maintain... I've decided to get a couple hubs off another car and put fresh bearings in them and toss them in the trunk with some tools, kinda like a spare tire... That way if I ever am on a trip and they go south (while I'm headed north) I will be OKay.. sort of

I'm still trying to figure out where to store the spare traney

According to the service records for my 92, the bearings have been replaced 5 times!! All within a few thousand miles of eachother. Ill assume the tech's didnt repack the bearings with the proper grease untill the last change. Done in 1999. This set is holding strong as of right now. *looks for some wood to nock on.*
The fact that the previous owner lived in Tahoe and commuted into Reno twice a day could have had somthin to do with it. Twisty mountain roads at high speeds can do that to a car *and its brakes*

I voted for a bearing changed in my 92, although it is technically a '91 Japan car. Moot point though.

It had very low kms when I bought it, and I have replaced the r r bearing two years and many miles ago. Been good since, I gave the mechanic stacks of info on how to do it and why replacements fail. Guess he did a good job.

Knock on wood.

Joe
