do i have ape-like arms? i reach under, and do everything without raising a thing. of course, you can't SEE what you're doing. you gotta go by feel. the filter is the tricky part, but not bad.

i do it myself, but at a private mechanics garage... i sorta volunteer/work there when i have free time, and i get free lift time and stuff... most private mechanics do oil changes at cost, so the 20$ or so you spend for them to do it, they are spending about 18$ on hazmat, the oil, and the filter. one of the guys that i work with used to manage the busiest jiffy lube in Illinois... and he was like 22. he said one of the workers read that the entire oil system (cooler and everthing) held 15 quarts of oil for this Porsche... so they drained out the oil pan, only holding like 5 quarts... and then the guy put like 11 quarts of oil in... when it over flowed... lets just say the guy driving the porsche was pissed off, and 2 weeks later he came in saying it was still smoking.

The day I have to have someone else change my oil is the day they put me in the ground.

I change it -- I don't lift the car and I don't remove the belly pan. I use, what I like to call the "Little Stevie Wonder" method of changing my oil.

Deja: You don't have to jack it up

I don't jack mine up.

Have some chunks of 2x6's laying around?

get a few. lay the long ones (3 feet?) in front of the tires. Sure, butt 'em right up against the front tires. Now, put the short ones (2 feet?) on top of the 3 footers. Give yourself about 6 inches in front of the tires. Do they look fairly straight out in front of the car?

Ta-DA, RAMPS! The kind that are not plastic (I' just can't trust plastic to keep a car off my head), or slippery metal (that shoot out when the car is 1/2 way up the ramp.)

The SVX will scoot right up the 1.5 inch steps so be ready on the brakes or you will drive off the 3 inch "cliff" on the other side.

This gives me enough room to slip my drain pan under the car and reach up to get to the filter.
piece - o - cake.

They lit my Chrysler 300M on fire in a quick change oil place once!

............and I agree with Matt, I fell much more manly when dirty, greasy and and laying under a car or truck!! (insert Tool Man Tim Taylor grunts here)

I have to jack the SVX about 1/2 inch to get the oil pan underneath.

i was just out doing something to the car and looked under it. i have the belly pan off for the summer, and it will be EXTREMELY easy to change the oil without it!!! the easiest oil change eVAr!

my plan will be oil change once in the fall before belly pan goes on for the winter, and then in the spring after the pan comes off. i only change it twice a year - Mobil1 and not a whole lot of miles per year.

I agree with Mike...About 6 months ago the local quick lube place bought one of our customers a new engine for this very reason...

I have a very reliable and good back-street mechanic to do all of my maintenance.

My hands are just too nice to get them dirty.

I change my oil every 30,000 miles whether it needs it or not

I do not have to jack up the car to change the oil, I do however have to lift up on the bumper a tad to slide the drain pan under the car.
