I could rave about CU but they seem to have ideals for the "average consumer" in mind and their tests/opinions reflect that. They also bias against US vehicles as unreliable regardless of the depth of unreliability.

Don't take to heart much of their medical opinions either, and that's my take on them as a physician.

JeffN...have you ever driven a new Lightning? If so, try it again, then drive a 2WD Silverado with the Vortec 5300, you'll understand why the lightning doesn't impress me. Better yet, drive the new Silverado SS and you'll never look twice at the Lightning again. Also, the new thunderbird is a dog. I worked at a Ford Dealer (Vinart, on Lehigh St in Allentown, for anyone who knows it) when the new TB came out. I, like everyone else there, was very excited to give her a spin. I was very dissapointed when i got my turn. It's more of a luzury car than an "image sports car"...mushy handling, lagging acceleration. Plus, the way they designed it makes it look like the rear suspension is sagging. The dual top idea is neat except for the process that you have to go through just to open the doors (with the hardtop on, you must pull up on the handle, and wait for the window to drop 1/2 inch before opening the door. Forget to do that, and your off to the Ford dealer for a $150 replacement window). Great design, eh?

I'm not even going to comment on the Neon part of this discussion. It's bad enough having to see those things on the road...let alone discuss their "unjust" ratings on this board.

First; I can't wait to see the new "SAABARU"

Second: Don't knock CU. It's a great magazine, when you need to buy a refrigerator, washing machine or lawn mower.

However, about 15 years ago they rated Scotch whiskeys. They picked Cutty Sark as no. 1. I almost threw up. Then I sat down and drank the rest of the bottle of Chivas.

Everyone rises to their own level of incompetance. CU objectivity ends at their level of knowledge. when they create the 'Law of CU" by stating as fact their "opinions" on things they examine, their authoritarianism gets a little scary.

and when they become an authoritative voice on something they know nothing of , they "consulnt" with other authoritative bodies and they print junk science. I became aware of thhis when, in almost any health issue, they defer to outside biased groups with an agenda of their own. That's like asking Gore's campaign leader to give an objective opinon of Bush. Or asking Shadow what he thinks of Chrysler

And tell me more about the Lightning/silverado as I've only driven the old ones.

There are plenty of examples of unjust / error prone reporting in the world today. It boils down to individually trusting a particular publication for it best opinions. I agree with Larry iii that CR is great for TV's Refrig's, VCR's (dating myself ), or DVD's, but very lacking in automobile "understanding".

Remember "60 Minutes" on the Audi "unintended acceleration"? Did a job on Audi sales in the US and even when proven wrong, NEVER acknowledged it publicly! I seldom watch "60 Minutes" today for that very resaon - can't trust any of their reporting any more.

I would add to that, "Audio Equipment". If what you are looking for is audio as an appliance, fine. CU however shares the same "tin ear" that the old Stereo Review magazine made famous. I was doubtful too....until I heard the difference between two different brands of....PATCH CORDS! For those whose ears can tell the difference, magazines like Stereophile, or several of the British magazines, are good sources of information.

You mean your ears still work properly, Don?! You've been married how long? Hah! One advantage to getting old is that my hearing is so non-discerning I can enjoy the crappiest components, thus saving a lot of money for more important things like Metamucil & Zestril.

<my hearing is so non-discerning I can enjoy the crappiest components>

I hate to hear that Ron.

Neko Case sounds OUTSTANDING on my B&W, Aperion, Plinius, Sonic Frontiers, Nordost system.

eh don, did you say something?

Audiphilia is for the young to pay for with their second jobs. Even audiovox sounds good these days. Too many years of sticking my head inside Led Zeppelins monitors in the front row.

I heard that about CU stereo reviews though.

i'll bet i could hook up the most expensive gold-connectored, oxygen-free blah blah blah cables and then switch them with a spool of Radio Shack wire and you couldn't tell the difference. audiophiles are amusing.
