Power Steering Noise

When I turn the steering wheel with the car stationery thus activating the power steering there is a mildly audible vibrating noise from the steering pump. This may be normal as it sounds rather like a valve releasing pressure while the steering is holding against a load with the vehicle not able to turn.

The belt is not slipping, there are no leaks and everything appears and performs normally. As my car is ex Japan I understand that I have speed sensitive steering. I hope someone will confirm that this in fact normal and I do not have some obscure fault.

Thanks in anticipation of the usual helpful response, Trevor.

Significant Technical Input
I'll have to pay particular attention to mine, I've not noticed it but what you're describing sounds normal. There is a pressure relief valve in the pump that will hiss, groan or similar when held at full lock or when the wheels are turned while the vehicle is still.

There is an o-ring at the reservoir to pump junction that cracks and allows air to be sucked into the system. The air bubbles will obviously make the sound more noticeable as they pass through thee same valve. There's a write-up in the how to locker, I believe.

Thanks Beav,

You have confirmed what I had hoped was the caurse of the noise. As far as I can work out I do not have the O ring problem. I had hoped you would reply but did not feel inclined to load you directly with the query as you take on so many. If an official club is established I will vote you an honourary (honorary) member.

You are a good bloke, Trevor.
