It is a horizontal engine. The plugs are mounted on the left and right sides of the engine, horizontally. There are access ports inside the wheel wells to get to them. The SVX has no plug wires as such... the fireing coil is mounted to the top of the plugs, eliminating the need for "plug wires"

aint they great?

Ryan McDonald has a homepage that has some how to's and one is changing the spark plugs. I have included the link that will show how to do it. Look for the tabs on the left and there will be one for "My Sunfire/SVX" Go to it, and you will find the links at the bottom of the page. I found them very helpful in doing this task. You can do a search and find some other helpful hints on this as well. Good luck.

If you are going to change them, give yourself at least a couple of hours (like 2-3) to do them. You have to take out a ton of stuff like airbox and battery. Make sure your engine is cool/cold as well or you might get burnt.

Thanks guys. This helps a lot. I think I will wait till I get the new bumper and hood and then do everything at one time.

Actually, make sure your engine is "stone cold." Aluminum is softer when it is warm. Don't want to take a chance of distorting your plug holes.

Also, in Ryan's description, he mentions "prying against the coil." I'm sure he meant prying against the bolt. NEVER pry against the coil. When I take mine out, I use a short, curved "nail puller" bar. It sounds "extreme" but, with the bar against the head and the notch against the bolt shoulder makes the job easier. Again, "finesse" is the key. Don't FORCE anything. Also, be careful when pulling the rubber access plugs (I didn't even use mine). Notice in the photo that the fender is "double walled." If you drop one of those suckers in there, it's gone. You'll have to worry about water getting into the engine compartment until you replace it. Just take your time and be careful.

Coil on plug technology back in 92. Isn't it beautiful? It really is an advanced car.

If the engine is cold, this can be easily done in under an hour, including removal of the battery and airbox. Those are the only two items that need to be removed to get easy access to the plugs. With a short 4" extension and a normal plug socket, you can get all 6 plugs in and out without going through the access holes. Use a ratchet that has the release button on the back of the head. That way, once the plug is loose, you can remove the ratchet and hand turn the plug out using the extension.

Ooh, good tip. I'll keep that in mind when I replace mine. Thanks!
