OT - Audi 1.8T
Guy at work just bought a 1999 Audi A4 1.8T. Says the engine puts out 150 hp (I forget the torque figure) but with an aftermarket computer chip, the HP goes to 200 and the torque goes to 245 lb-ft. This sounds like an unbelievable increase just from a software upgrade and no hardware changes.
Does anyone out there have any idea how they accomplish this? Or is this a scam? |

Umm...doubt it...the largest gain i ever heard of simply from a chip was 20hp. To get 50hp the factory would have had to detune the engine massively, and then it would get horrible gas mileage.

That number is very real. I always thought the 1.8T's had 180 hp to start with, though. But yes, it does bump the hp number up to 200... not sure about torque. It wsa big news with the New Beetle owners, because the new beetle has the same engine as the 1.8T. After getting a chip, the turbo beetle gets the same power increase to 200.

That number is real!
Early 1.8T's were 150hp in all applications (transverse (Golf, Beetle, Jetta, exc. TT) and longitudinal (A4, Passat)). They were later boosted to 170 and 180 hp (and 225hp in TT) depending upon vehicle. Chips from Neuspeed, APR, Autothority, Wetterauer, TAP, GIAC and others take the hp up to 200-210 and torque from 150-170 to 245 ft. lbs. This engine is massively detuned from the manufacturer.
My daily driver is a 2001.5 1.8T 5 speed VW Passat Variant (aka station wagon)

Anybody have a clue as to how this actually works? I was under the impression that the chip (software) would deal with fuel mixture, ignition and trans shift points with an automatic. None of these sound (to my inexperienced ears) to be able to deliver that kind of boost without changing cams, etc.
Thanks. |

But it's a little different on a turbo car because the machinery to get more air into the engine is there. The boost can be turned up, stuffing in more air and producing more power.

The more pressure you force into a turbo engine, the quicker things are going to go wrong. That's why i have always looked at turbos as a last resort way of adding HP.

The more power you get out of the car, the less reliable it will be, in general. In particular, any modification that will substantially increase your power will also increase the load on those parts. It's why you have to upgrade other engine components along with it, in order to handle the load better.

This is the case with the 1.8T. It is detuned so its not a direct competitor to the 2.8L V6. The 2.8 is detuned so that its not in direct competition with the 2.7T engine.
hope that helps. -Mike |
