Tranny Losing It & Tires?
I recently replaced 2 tires that had "powder" in them - probably because I hadn't rotated them in a while.
The new tires are on the back of the car. The front has 2 tires that were not rotated well either and may have similar issues. At costco the guys said having unbalanced tires (2 with powder in them or that weren't rotated properly on the front and 2 new ones on the back) could cause AWD transfer case (tranny) problems. Sure enough, roughly 2 weeks after having these back tires on my 93 with 98k miles is not shifting properly. From a stop the revs go to roughly 3k before shifting everytime, and sometimes do not shift until 7 if I jump on it without engaging power mode in this gear (1st I'm assuming). Then I popped it into second and just got revving as if I was in neutral for a good 5 seconds before it engaged as I was doing about 15mph when this happened. The car shifts fine at 7 and in power mode when I'm in 3rd gear. When I turn a corner and accelerate from a stop, the car will not shift until 4k rpms - which hints that the tires may have put excess pressure on the tranny. The front two tires still have plenty of tread, and they were rotated just now - though I don't think they have powder in them like the back 2 had. If it isn't the tires, is there anything I can do to prevent the tranny from dying? Again, these problems are noticeable from 1st-2nd all the time starting today but the car has 98k and I hot rod the crap out of it most of the time. Is there anything I can do now to prevent something from snapping and me shelling out 1k or more for a rebuild?

Re: Tranny Losing It & Tires?
running two different tires on the front and back is going to cause issues. I can't at the moment recall but your probably burned something up and regardless end result is going to call for some transmission work. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but

Re: Tranny Losing It & Tires?
Yes, you should never replace just 2 tires on an AWD car, always replace all 4 as a set...and keep them rotated...

Re: Tranny Losing It & Tires?
I don't think miss matched tires would burn out your brake band. It's just a coincidence. I can do a partial rebuild on your box if you are interested and you'll never have to worry about your transmission again. Your car will also be much faster.

Re: Tranny Losing It & Tires?
how does a partial rebuild make a car faster? Do you change up the gears or shifting patterns? I'm missing something.

Re: Tranny Losing It & Tires?
the powder in your tires is from heat caused by underinflation, keep an eye on your pressure.

Re: Tranny Losing It & Tires?
Because it includes a valve body rework which makes the car shift lightning fast. A stock SVX transmission shifts very slow. My transmisisons shift instantaneously. It's night and day.

Re: Tranny Losing It & Tires?
I think your tranny is just about to go out at the same times.
Ideally, you should have 4 same tires on AWD cars and rotate them periodically. Or at least you should get the two new ones with the same brand one. Never ever seen my so-many tires have powder on them. Any pictures? lol How old is your tire? What's manufacture date? Old-old tires tend to crack.

Re: Tranny Losing It & Tires?
When I downshift manually into 2nd the car does not slow down at all - its like I never downshifted - but when I hit the gas, there is revving hesitation for 3 seconds then it loudly thumps into second (I think) at a high rev. Maybe that is more specific and will tell you whether or not it's the brake band. I'm a college kid and just want something simple. Later (8 years) when I can afford it I'm sure I'll get in touch with you on a rebuild as I'd like to restore the car, but a rebuild is most likely not an option...

Re: Tranny Losing It & Tires?
No power brake in 2nd manual is a sure sign of soft parts damage internally.
