Re: SVX gravel rally car...surely not? Absolutely...

Sorry guys, have been offline for a while.

Got the ITB's on and the car running. Did an event with them, but hit a tree/rock which damaged (ripped is probably the better word) the suspension so we didn't continue.

I've been working on a few other bits and pieces lately...swapping out the coils for late model coils to try and avoid ignition problems, and also starting to fit the oil cooler.

I think I posted elsewhere that the ITB's are the way forward. I still haven't dyno'd with them on...that's next.

No more rallies this year in Canberra, so next year will be the next run.

Matt

Ouch
How did the engine respond with the ITBs?
What are "late model coils"?, I think I missed something, somewhere

Congrats on running in the rally

Re: SVX gravel rally car...surely not? Absolutely...

Swapping in late model STI coils...was looking at Bosch coils, but these are a better prospect.

ITB's were great...revved to 7500rpm no problems.

Need to work on the tune. I had 550cc injectors in...way too big.

Re: SVX gravel rally car...surely not? Absolutely...

I take it you have some sort of aftermarket EM setup. If so you should just be able to dial back the length of time the injectors open per revolution, right?

Re: SVX gravel rally car...surely not? Absolutely...

Yes Cam you are correct, but unfortunately, the base injector opening time was starting to get so small, that idling and cruise were very rich because the injectors couldn't physically open and close in time. The resolution was very bad.

So moving back to 370cc's...should be way more manageable.

Re: SVX gravel rally car...surely not? Absolutely...

Can you guys believe I actually finished a rally?

http://safari.rallytiming.com/home.s...rclass=Overall

9th place belies the problems we had, but the 3rd fastest in the first stage gives you an indication of what might be possible.

So chuffed to finish.

Not sure what to do now.

Looked like a 'Sunday drive in the bush'.

What were the problems?

Harvey.

Re: SVX gravel rally car...surely not? Absolutely...

Harvey,

2nd stage we left the road at pretty high speed and beached ourselves on a big grader berm. I bent the steering wheel with the impact...and have a very sore neck today. Couldn't reverse off berm with wheels in the air, so we're stuck for 3-4 min, but ended up getting out. Alignment was bad and a wheel fell off too (loose wheel nuts...oops).

After that the tune went off song. I wondered if the fuel pump/filter were blocked after that...dislodged some gunk from the bottom of the tank when we hit maybe? Symptoms were that any acceleration and it would stumble/hesitate for about 3-5 seconds. Think about how often you hit the gas in a stage...every corner and then some! But at full noise, it was fine.

Played with some settings and I have a theory. I think the wideband sensor had a lot of allowance for correction, and with the pump and filter blocked, I reckon we had no fuel pressure....however, with wideband correction, it could just tell the ecu to richer it up...so where a standard car may have stopped, we continued. In the last stage I removed the fuel filter from the system to see if that fixed it...it made it a bit better, so I think it's the pump.

Re: SVX gravel rally car...surely not? Absolutely...

You are doing well Matt when you think about the position in the first stage on a standard engine the cars potential is there. Great job.
