Transmission if going supercharger
Hello,
the information I request is probably around already but it's always a bit difficult to search for. Also, the level of activity isn't very intensive on the forum, so I thought you might not mind that I ask questions that could be answered by hours of searching by myself. An axe has come up locally and it's 99% likely a VTD. The price seems right according to the condition as far as I can judge and the car has been registered for 10+ years (it's a 1997) which means I can increase effect without paying extra! I see that quite a few people have gone down supercharger lane, so I assume there's enough info around for a good tuner to help me out with that kind of project. The question is: How much power can the 4EAT safely handle? The seller has stated that the unit got overhauled very recently. Not sure yet if it broke down or just needed a good pounding. Did anyone ever successfully go turbo and live to tell about it? Is there a proper how-to on supercharger? I can't recall seeing one in the How-To section. Thanks! |

Re: Transmission if going supercharger
Short answer, go manual. 4EAT already has issues with the SVX adding power won't help.
There is no proper how to for supercharger as far as I remember because its a majority custom job. There are no kits or bolt on parts.

Re: Transmission if going supercharger
Thanks! Another question to the whole supercharger issue.. how much power can you actually gain by adding a moderate one rather than an all-in affair? Is reprogramming the ECU a necessity if an SC is added?
Teh reason I ask is simply because the car needs to be approved by authorieties (= TÜV compliance). There a are a number of rules governing this and the good tuners always tell me to come back when I actually have the car (by mail, I could call them). |

Re: Transmission if going supercharger
I believe SVX files is running a supercharger with a 4.44 auto tranny.

Re: Transmission if going supercharger
The style of supercharger you use and the er, driving style you plan to use it with are very significant factors!

Re: Transmission if going supercharger
He does, but I also believe he has upgraded some of the internal parts if I am not mistaken.

Re: Transmission if going supercharger
So there is actually no rule of thumb, say, the 4EAT can handle 300bph or 260bph or 350bhp?
Obviously, I'm not going to do any swap until the transmission breaks down. The center diff, some oil valves and clutch plates where replaced by Subaru techs in december so it might actually live for a while.. unless that was the beginning of the end. Then I think a 5MT STI box could be a good swap as I do prefer manual to automatic. |
