Roll Cage in the SVX
Who out there has a roll cage and harness bar? Any pics? I really want to add sports seats, maybe Cobra Daytonas or Bride Eurosters and 5-point harness. I don't want to do that without a roll bar. I'm thinking a 4-point bar, braced against the body on either side of the rear seat and a removable harness bar. This set-up would still allow some access to the rear seat.

Ask Hocrest, he has the link for the maker. Measurements were taken from his car so it should fit in a full interiored car. Biggest problem you'll have is welding it in with the interior in and once its in having head room.
If you're coming to Reading see if OT is bringing the car up or not. If not I'm sure you could twist his arm into some pics of it.

Are you looking for a structure that is simply there to support the seats and harness? Or are you looking to build it to the specs of a race sanctioning body? Do you want it for the look, or functional? Di you plan on driving this car in the street? How tall are you?
There is a variety of designs you can choose from to meet you needs. The biggest problem of our cars is the lack of head room. You Best bet is to bend up a main hoop that goes just behind the B pillar, then ties into the rear strut towers. This will be a sufficient roll bar with the ability to keep the roof from crushing in, and mount your harness straps to. If you daily the car, avoid roof bars that run by the doors. If you ever crash, you likely to crack you head open on these with out a helmet on. |

I am not looking to meet any sanactioning body race regulations. I plan on driving the car on the street and don't want or need the door bars. I want to have a 5-point harness, but I realize they make you very vulnerable in a rollover if the roof collapses. I've seen a lot of advice that says don't do 5-point belts in a closed car unless you have rollover protection.
I was already thinking of having the roll bar run up from the floor just to the rear of the door opening. It would continue up, slanting toward the back to follow the B-pillar. I need the top of the roll bar to be well behind the front seat back, as I am very tall. I was thinking that the two braces could tie into the strut towers and I wouldn't have to tear up the rear seats. Not looking to do a diagonal unless it is bolt in along with the bolt-in harness bar. Either of those would preclude access to the rear seat, which doesn't matter on the track, but is useful on the street, even if there is only room for one person with the roll bar and supports to either side.

Gotcha. Sounds like you already have a decent plan of attack here. Just use at least .120 wall tube, (DOM only) and you will be good to go for rollover protection. The SVX has a good b pillar structure as it is. As for you height, if your going to be the only driver, you may want to consider bolting you seat directly to the seat rails and loose the slider. That will drop your butt a good 3" and give you a better seating position. More room for a helmet as well if you autocross.
If you are welding the tube into a corner, use this boxing method as it is far stronger than just welding to the floor. Last edited by smc; 03-04-2013 at 07:37 PM. |

Those photos aren't from an SVX, are they? Haven't ever seen an SVX inerior stripped naked, but, this geometry doesn't look right. By the way, any opinions on my seat choices, Cobra Daytona or Bride Euroster? I think they will result in a significant drop in seat height.

One is an impreza, the other is a bmw. It just what I could find in a quick search just for visual reference. I would take the Cobra over the Bride any day of the week. Bride is more for the racing look, while cobra has the bolstering and build quality to hold you in the seat while cornering. Avoid leather. Even in these seats, leather will let you slide around quite abit.

And if you ever get a fixed back seat, I would HIGHLY recommend Momo seats. I tried a few different seats over the years and momo was by far the most back and tushy friendly of the racing seats.

Here is the Bride seat. It is in suede, or pseudo-suede.
Here is the Cobra Daytona. It is cloth. Will have to get either equiped with a penetration for the 5-point harness.
