Comtemplating dash removal project.
I am getting a little tired of not being able to easily change which vent the heat or AC comes out of. It's been this way for a few years and I have been reluctant to fix it because the dash has to be removed or at least pulled back a bit to get at the left side mix motor. I know it is going to be a huge pain to do it, but what I was wondering was how likely is it that something gets screwed up in the process? I am hoping that it is just a matter of a lot of nuts and bolts, time and patience rather than something with a great likely hood of causing electric problems. Any thoughts or advice from those that have done this?

It's actually only about a dozen or so screws/bolts since yours is a 92 and not overly terrible.
The procedure is in the manuals which I know have been posted all over lately. |

If the problem is just the air mix motor (#2 in diagram), you can change it from under the dash, passengers side, by the center console. It helps to have a son who can contort his body to see the two bolts that hold it in. The two control rods for heat to cooling just clip into it.

So I can say for sure that changing this motor is possible without removing the dash.
Using one of those mini thumb wheel screw drivers I was able to unscrew the three screws holding it, but the real trick is that the metal rod has to be removed before the motor will slide out. There is hinged clip that has to be pushed off the rod using a long thin screw driver, then pull the rod towards the motor till it slides free. Once the screws and rod are removed it will come out. I'm very happy about this, it been about 4 years since my motor went bad and I thought more sure I would have to remove the dash to replace it. Having a used Heater core to reference was big help. Once I finally figured out what to do it only took about an hour to replace it.

well considering that I tried to remove it unsuccessfully on 2 other occasions and posted asking advice several times, I came to the conclusion that it was not possible without pulling the dash away. Once you know how to do it it seems simple.
