more than that amount of 92's were built, just that's the amount sold in 92. Remember that 92's were still sitting around on lots well into '93

Nate, I'm well aware of that, I do remember clearly, perhaps better than anyone here, as I bought my new 92 in the first week of January 93 .

My question relates to VIN numbers. In other years, the last four of VIN is the build sequence for any given model year, typically 0001 to 0301 for 93, etc.

The question is, what 92 model year VIN, with respect to the last four numbers, represents #1 and what represents #2. I'm not interested in whether the car was produced in 91 or 92, or sold in 92 or 93.

Earl has a list, with earliest and latest recorded, what SHOULD BE the earliest and latest production numbers? That is the question,

Actually, off the top, without digging, what was the VIN of the PACE CAR? Going from there, what should be the last number??

The VIN off the pace car was 100002 with a MFG date of 10/90

And so far, for 92's, Earl has mfg dates of 3/91-5/92 for MY 92's ranging in VINs from 100041-109680 for MY 92's
so like I said, there were more than 5280 MY92's produced...

Since this thread is for 92 production, do we agree on Joe Spitz' US production numbers:
http://www.cars101.com/subaru_svx.html

Toward the end of the link is summary of US SVX sales by year. Adding 91, 92, 93 sales is 9039, less 301 for the 93 model leaves 8738 as a production number US MY92. The VIN spread on Earl's 92 sheet proves more than 9600 MY92 were produced, this number can't be US production alone.

The difference must be North American Canadian spec, as the Canadian SVX is the same model as the US, both use the same engine spec and transmission spec. The Canadian cars fall in the same MY VIN sequence, as noted in next paragraph. I started a thread in an attempt to find out how many different models were produced worldwide, which would help us understand MY production, etc., but information dried up..

Earl, in your '97 summary, notice that numbers 57 and 426 are Canadian spec, but still in the VIN sequence. Miles should be listed in KM when appropriate, to make things more clear. So, my point is, US MY production is one number, the total MY production of this model is another number.

Earl, it would seem that your year-by-year list of MY numbers should also state which markets this model was sold in, ie, US, Canada, etc.

As for '97, perhaps the MY VIN sequence is 700-800, as the model was sold in at least two markets. Likewise, for the other years.

So, the big question, how many MY were actually produced, for each lettered model year, of the model sold in the US, Canada, and elsewhere?

1992 3667*
1993 3859
1994 1666
1995 1801
1996 1111
1997 640
Total: 14,257
*Note: 1991 Production started in Jan. 1991 until June 1991
for the 1992 SVX.
Total 1992 sales: 5,280. All 1992s have 'N' in the VIN.

I think it went right over everyone's head, including mine, maybe even Earl?

I apologize for my cynicism and if I came off as an ass
That really had never, ever even creeped into my mind... And I have actually thought about this stuff quite a bit as I have always been very involved with numbers...

No worries, you were great . Actually got me to dig deeper to make some sense of it.

It would be nice to list the cars on the sheets by market, maybe we can learn more about the VIN sequences, models, and markets.

I was quickly but closely looking through all the 92's, well about half of them, and there doesn't seem to be anything in the VIN that would decipher it being a Canadian or US market car. The sequence is all the same and the 4 numbers between the CX and NH all varies the same as with US models. I guess the only way to know is by the trim plate on the strut tower?

Exactly my point, nothing in the VIN indicates it because the Canadian-spec SVX is the same model as the US, falls in the same sequence, with different trim codes for day time lights, heated seats, color, etc.

The best way to know is to record the information when the car is registered, if the car has 50,000km, and the owner is in Canada, it is recorded as Canadian and km.

The 97s I referred to, in the '97 registration thread, the owners were Canadian, and gave mileage in KM. One of those owners '97 is Laguna Blue, which proves the point even more dramatically. Same model, same VIN sequence as US market, non-US color with heated seats, built in the middle of the sequence we are recording.

Nothing in Earl's registration documents will tell you the market, or km vs miles, which is another one of my points. We need to document that, and the rest of the codes on the tower. We need more information on the survey.

In my model thread, I was seeking that kind of information. We must have it to understand the total production differences. The survey there asks for more than VIN sequence, check it out. That thread was to help understand world markets, but now I see it as important in North America.

We are off to a great start documenting North American [US/Canada] production, thanks to Earl!

What we don't know is whether there is another market that has the same engine/trans programming, thus VINs in our sequence

Re: 92 Svx

I have not read this entire thread. But I can offer this for what it's worth. I bought my '92, in '92. At the time I was told that Canada on brought in one model and that it was the top of the line offered by Subaru with no options available. No alarm system or heated seats.

Is your VIN on Earl's 92 list?
Yes, the trim spec was top of the line, do you have the info from the strut tower?
