When it comes to red on an SVX...

(Wait a minute.... I have to put my flak jacket on first, followed by my Nomex jumpsuit... OK)

As I was saying, Both Barcelona Red and Brilliant Red look good on the SVX...

but both pale in comparison to the factory color that never made it to the United States. SWISS RUBY MICA. Incredibly stunning

Paint Code: 247
Available in Japan, Australia and New Zealand

They felt bad because it took so long and the owner might be doing business with our charter company providing mobile paint service for out aircraft. So I think he wanted to make a good impression with the quality of the work and the price of the job. All other shops I went to averaged a quote between $3200 and $3750

I am the chief pilot for a 135 charter company. That picture is from our 1997 Citation Ultra. Check out the "flying" pics posted on Picasa next to the SVX photos. I see you are a "crazy pilot" how'd you get that name??

It is bronze and thanks, it is a good combo now that I see the contrast after being painted.

The only thing i dont like about red is that it gets sun faded badly over time faster than more colors, my brother's RSX is proof of that.
The PPG paint has a life time warranty which includes fading and the shop I used is warranting the labor too.

I am not too worried about the struts considering it is under the hood. I did tell them that I want NO paint on ANY parts of the engine so maybe that scared them a little. If I do decide to paint the strut towers and so on, I will use the Barcelona color, the paint shop has left over paint that they can give me.

I agree!

But I have to agree with Danny on the strut towers. I little extra time in removal of the coolant/washer reservoirs and some protective masking would have made all the difference.

I have used this technique before very successfully. The airbrush is much mure controllable and able to get into small areas.

(But svxcess would have removed the VIN/ build date and trim plates from the door jambs and strut towers, painted underneath and pop-riveted them back into place. Because knowing they were green underneath would really bug me) HAHA!

I would have masked off or removed as much as possible in these areas and painted down as far as I could with a satin black with a good airbrush, trying to cover as much green as I could see. Then with the airbrush, I would have sprayed the red heavily where it was most visible and down into the recesses as far as I could. This way the red fades into the black deep in the shadows of the engine bay as is far less noticible. Then do the same with the clearcoat..
To me "all the difference" is the quality of the exterior but maybe in the future I will consider the struts and vin.

If so then there is a chance that spraying into a hole where there is green, might cause engine spray under/around the engine or other areas for unwanted paint. Since the engine and its components could never be sealed completely remaining installed in the car, personally, I am glad they took the more conservative approach and didn't use much more labor on this area.
I am not too familiar with the airbrush. I am assuming you can still get overspray? Again I am glad labor was mostly used on the exterior of the car.
I do not have pictures yet but the door plastic panels were removed and painted separately. Thanks for your critique.

Nice SVX! Color seems rich. Who's car is that? Id like to see a pic of that engine bay if repainted?

That's a very good price from what I've seen. Certainly worth the results.

Mmmmm... Citation... I'm still working on the baby Cessna's. The name comes from a while back and involved a glider going between some trees (didn't hit anything, just scared the **** out of some of the guys on the ground). I try not to do that sort of thing anymore.

Looks awesome! It's neat to see it with the 97 grill. I have thought of getting that.

Barcelona red is so beautiful but I might be biased.

That is one beautiful color! and it looks awesome on the SVX.

The irony is that it is called Swiss Ruby... and it is not available in Europe

Awwww hell.

Why do you want to ruin my dream of a blue SVX, by making me lust after that red one?

I love my garnet red Legacy GT... which is a very similar color. I have thought about re-painting my car Ruby Mica or Garnet red.

(BTW, I love the SVX's ruby mica better than the 2009-current Ruby Red Pearl that new Legacies and other new Subarus get painted, which is slightly darker than Ruby Mica, or Garnet Red Pearl.)

Re: Pictures, New paint, New color!

I have tried to find that paint code for a long time and have not been successful.

Need to find a paint company in the region where the color was available to get a paint formula.

Another option is to order a pre-painted part and have it computer-scanned to get a perfect match.

Anyone here that can help?

This color looks great with the gray interior. Noy sure how it would look with beige.

John I bet the tan interior/ruby exterior would look the best combination ever only in the case where the trim is also painted ruby.

And what do you mean by paint code? isn't it 247? or are you looking for its formulation? If so I think I can help.

I agree with you Danny. Mike621's solid claret repaint looks infinitely better than the stock claret/black two-tone.

The factory paint code for Swiss Ruby Mica (sometimes called just Red Mica) is 247. It seemed to be available in the JDM for 1991-1993 and in Australia and New Zealand about the same time. I have been trying to find an international paint company that could supply its formulation.

Bipa's car is a Swiss SVX which was bought while in Germany, so Switzerland could have gotten that color as well.

Any paint supplier in those markets should be able to formulate matching paint to match that color.

Since these formulas are not available in the US, the only way to duplicate it here is to have a scan of a Swiss Ruby part (or paint chip) and have it computer matched over here, using our paints. The important part is the kind and size of the matallic "mica"

We have a couple of Swiss members who may be able to help as well. Anything you can do to help would be appreciated. This color is too magnificent not to share with any member here desiring a red repaint.

Re: Pictures, New paint, New color!

John,
Correct me if I am wrong, but the 247 itself should enable colormatching. Additionally, there was a repainted SVX at Reading X that appeared to be Swiss Ruby Mica. I need to go search for a photo.

Re: Pictures, New paint, New color!

John, I am going on vacation on the 27th. I am gonna stop by a paintshop to discuss few issues with the guy there.

These shops usually have specialized computers just for paint codes and compositions. These computers are usually updated each year with international paint codes. I never faced a problem of getting the correct paint that I want through the code I give to him.

Well that is on the level of the paint itself, not on the level of the composition. I dunno if he can give it to me but I will try my best. I have 3~4 shops that I know and dealt with in the past. I will try to pass by all of them and get the formula, if two match, then I guess they will be honest about it.

They work with RM paints, most of them.
