Re: What is happening with SVXWN?

It has been my feeling for quite some time that the forum has outlived its usefulness to many of the senior members. At this point, it has been in need of an overhaul for years. I said something to this effect awhile back, and I have some ideas about how we could change it, mainly with the technical section in the orginization of subcategories with background information and certain "experts" in each area could get their minds together in a thread that would outline the information to be in that subcategory, as some of us have been working on these cars a long time now and are actually professional technicians or might as well be. For example: I get alot of questions to my personal email about the air conditioner and the transmission. These should be organized into sections like A/C questions, Transmission questions, etc. Clicking on these links would have all the background info in a sticky for pulling codes and that sort of thing, and some of us could answer specific questions that are beyond the descriptions of the common problems of the car, if we had experience in that area or with that system. Some, like me, have had SVXs for so long now that we are experiencing repeat failures and have tried different fixes and know what will work and what won't, not to mention owning one of these for 10+years will give you a good idea of what problems are likely to show up.

We also need to do something about the arguing on this site, I mean in some places it is appropriate, in others it is not.

I find myself posting less and even visiting less because I still think it was pretty absurd with what happened at reading, that was a major slap in the face, because some of the people did all this work to have that pace car there and simply said "oh well you won't want to miss reading this year" Which is subjective, considering I live across the country and work a job where I will loose about $250 per day I am not at work, and I do not get paid time off. It should have been put out there that this was a possibility, no matter what, It could have been announced months before that this was a possibility and I could have come. Had it been stated that it was a 30% possibility, I would have come. It would have put me in a bind, but i would have come. The witholding of this information baffles me and I can not understand why it was done that way, unless there is some sort of "elite" group of network members that are privy to that information and the other "lesser" members don't get to be in the circle.

Furthermore, It is at the point now where someone asks a question, and someone knowledgeable gives an answer, and either they don't like it or someone else tells them they are wrong. So what is the point in posting?

That's some thoughts I have on the run of things. Probably sounds harsher than it is. But "it is what it is"

Re: What is happening with SVXWN?

yes there is witholding of valuable information... Yes there is a secret society within the 100 members (maybe) that actually post here that are conspiring against you... How do I know this? I am one of them... We will be at your door shortly...

On a more serious note, if you were 5 years old... 5 weeks before your birthday your parents told you what you were getting but wouldn't let you see of touch it.... Kinda ruins the whole birthday huh?

Re: What is happening with SVXWN?

I believe it was stated a million times it was done like that because they don't want reading to be reliant on what special things would show up. Reading is not about a pace car or road racing car. Its about the people and the fun to bad had. Most people didn't know about the car some did, but still alot of people showed up.

Re: What is happening with SVXWN?

I wish this bitterness and complaining about the Pace Car would just be forgotten.

Many of us worked our butts off for almost a year trying to get this to happen. Many have tried and failed to achieve this for more than 7 years! We had rules, regulations and conditions, as well as financial commitments, to meet. One member contributed a sizeable amount, even though he knew he would be unable to be there to enjoy his investment. It was the first time in history that a historic Subaru vehicle was ever displayed at a private function.

The people involved discussed repeatedly just how to handle disclosure and it was thought that the way we handled it was the most appropriate.

Members have flown in from the West Coast, the Rockies and Southern Texas, at great expense, when the only thing that was offered was just plain old "Reading"-- the cars, and mostly, the people.

And although the Pace car was "confirmed" months earlier, its actual appearance was not guaranteed until 24 hours before the meet.

Subaru said that if the chance of rain was 50% or greater, they would not chance bringing the Pace Car from Cherry Hill. Even if they did and it rained later, the car would remain inside the enclosed trailer.

How would you feel if you only came to Reading because we said the Pace Car was supposed to be there and it didn't show up at the last minute?

I guess fraternizing with the other members, who come year after year without any expectations, would have to be a poor substitute.

Thats why people go to family reunions... to reconnect and enjoy each other's company. The reunion IS the event.

Earthworm was the member who came the longest distance. He drove a total of 3200 miles round trip from Winnepeg, Manitoba to Morgantown, PA . His car is a 1992 SVX with close to 200,000 miles on it. Despite the cost of his gas, food and lodging enroute and his hotel room at Reading, he gladly came without the promise of anything special, except meeting old friends.

What do we have to promise... and deliver, to entice people to come to a 20th Anniversary meet? Nothing special was offered by Subaru for the 10th Anniversary meet, except a plant tour (which is nothing special; anyone can go for free on Mondays and Wednesdays)

As an old Yahoo SVX site devotee who came over here in 2001, & as an official under-cover agent for the ultra-secretive SVXWN "chosen people" coterie; AND as a person who has a first name relationship with John, Earl, Tom(s), Di, Larry AND even RANDY! (See - I DO know their first names): I can assure any conspiracy theorists that EVEN I was kept clueless as to the contents of one white trailer as it was pried open at Reading X. Actually I was kinda' hoping for the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders to come jiggling out....but ya' can't please everybody.

And PS - when will "you people" learn the difference between "loose" & "lose"?

Don't fuss over the guy, Ron is an old bugger. I know so because he knows I am an old fart. We have been on this special first name basis for years.

Trouble is, he does not come here with his old time humour as much as he used to.

Not easy doin' stand-up when all you want to do is sit down. (bada-boom)

Old time humour (humor) ain't what it used to be, Trevor (IF that's your real name). Good satire seems lost. Witness the demise of Saturday Night Live. (Kiwis may be oblivious to this reference).

Then again, maybe I'm just not hip with what passes for celebrity these days.
Sigh. It ain't easy gettin' old....but I'm still havin' fun!

Hang in there ya' old(er) Kiwi fart!

Re: What is happening with SVXWN?

I have just read all your comments in this thread guys. There has been too many opinions and too much derailment from the original topic, but that is fine.

A lot of people expressed the fact that they have been too long and know too much to post anymore. Well it is not the issue of knowing here and this is not purely a technical forum. Is this what SVXWN is to you? Whenever you have a problem you cannot fix, you come here and ask for advice?

Well it is not the case for me. I ENJOY myself here reading other people's comments, expressing my own opinion, discussing issues, posting stuff deemed interesting that I found somewhere over the web, etc... Through your postings, I understand more and more about the way you think but I know I cannot assimilate everybody and everything. But I try my best.

Also you guys mentioned that there are updates in your lives keeping you away from your keyboards. I can understand that. If I were back home also I might be in the same situation, but what I can guarantee is that I cannot keep myself away from SVXWN for more than 2 days in normal conditions. I cannot help but catching up on everything that I've missed in those days and I will surely be expressing my opinion even if it DIDN'T REALLY CONTRIBUTE to the thread. I just want to keep everything alive, and I admit most of my replies and opinions are inducive to others to reply back. Check them out if you want

I used to wake up in the morning, go to work, get my coffee and open SVXWN, start reading and do this --> . I literally didn't know where to start or to whom to reply tp (same as the case of this thread).
Now I get this face each time I log in. There are merely some posts here and there to reply to and I am really saddened.

So people please lurk around more, 30 mins of your time each day will not hurt you. We (SVXWN) are still your friends here even the overseas members. We do cherish your contribution to this network even if it was minimal. For me the SVXWN is my SVX, Facebook is just the 350z and you can all be damn sure the SVX will never replace that other piece of sh**.

Re: What is happening with SVXWN?

Subie love! Svx for the win... I love this car and I don't care who. Fell out of. Love with it or never liked it in the first place, and this place has been the home and driving force for my addiction from the day I got my SVX given to me for my 17th birthday back in 05, it was a tease! I got the car but could only cruise it around the block because it needed some repairs when. I first got it. I was instantly in love and had to know everything about it.

I've put my heart and soul into my svx. I've learned almost everything I know about cars trying it first on my svx. Sure a beamer or lambo or a porche may drive "better" but honestly I love the way my svx drives and no matter what car I decide to get later on I will always have my smokey! : ) I really want to buy tom's shadow machine too, if I could sell my truck today id be callin tom as soon as the check was in my hand.

Honestly I think a lot of people are just barely discovering the SVX or some who wanted one for years is just now getting them. I will do my part to keep this tight knit community alive, and I'm always on here, as much as I can be. My girlfriend rolls her eyes all the time because shell look at what my browser on my phone is open to and 9 times outa 10 its the svxwn or shell come over and ill be on the computer drooling over peoples mods or planning my next mod. Ya my list is getting more stuff checked off, but hey as long as we keep innovating and finding new ways to improve our cars or talk about how awesome they are, I'm sure the network will be here. But one thing us die hards need to do is anytime you spot an svx tell that driver to get on the network!

I do agree its been slow lately but the ecconomy is rough right now and a lot of us have checked off the cheaper mods off our lists and have 10K investments we have to save for... and no I'm not talkin about the shadow machine... cause that's a whole nother story :P so I attribute it to the economy. Don't lose hope guys! Let's keepthe subie love goin, and get out there and let these cars be seen and tell people how much you love them! And were all always here ready to talk about our addiction! :P

Re: What is happening with SVXWN?

I hope this place stays at least a bit vital and social.

I hope my purchase of a slightly rough SVX won't preclude my fiscal possibility of buying a much nicer one.

I did not expect SVX to have the profound effect on me that it has, even a rough old paint-damaged and accident damaged one like I have.

I used to think that you needed to tolerate rough suspension for good handling.

I used to think turbos were always preferable. "moar power!", and all that.

The SVX isn't rough. The SVX isn't that overly complicated or possibly an engine time-bomb if the turbo isn't just right.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't wanting a newer car, something with parts in stock, and maybe even warranty in-effect. Something with 20-year newer tech, and possibly more mechanical commonality for easier maintenance and parts availability.

But I can't think of a better car than SVX, of it's type. AWD GT Coupes are rare as it is, and Subaru has abandoned the genre for the last 13 years, and it's upcoming coupe won't be nearly similar.

G37x is even heavier, but probably the closest. A5 3.2 is even more expensive and heavier.

Neither are as uniquely thought-out, nor as sleek. Neither have a flat 6 for low height, and boxer smoothness.

996 Carrera 4S is more expensive, even used, and Porsches take $$$$$$ to maintain.

SVX really is a unique piece. I hope my driver lasts a good long time... and I hope to have the chance to buy another, better example to convert to a manual gearbox, and keep nicer, longer.

Nobody seems like they are really interested in building a real successor.

I really hope this forum and community is going to continue to be around, both for technical, and for social reasons.
