Talking "old" newbie here

Looks like I have gone and done it. Tomorrow I'll be picking up one of the cars on my bucket list. I have always liked the SVX and I kinda of stumbled across a really nice one. As a long time Subaru owner (6 total) I am really keen on getting my hands on this SVX. I parted ways with my 2004 STi a few months ago and it was driving me nuts. While I loved my STi, it was a bit too boy racer for a guy in his late 30's. Well that and my wife ABSOLUTELY hated it. Funny though since she loved her '02 WRX before I "ruined it" LOL!

I'll post pics and stuff tomorrow if I can spare some time. We need to get the car in the air and give it a very good look-over. If all checks out, Ill be driving it home! I hope to stop lurking and become an active member on the forum. I am an ASE Master tech as well as I-Car gold certified but don't be surprised if I ask a lot of questions. First sign of a good tech is the ability to take their ego out of the picture and absorb all the information they can about a car. I have owned about 100 cars over the yrs (mostly Fiero's) that range from a classic Corvair to a Nissan Skyline GTR. I think she'll be in good hands.

Car:
1992 Subaru SVX (obviously)
LS-L
78K miles
Full service history
All original down to the OEM stereo!
No accident history
Black on black
Touring package(?)

It recently had all the wheel bearings replaced as well as the PWR steering pump and I spotted a rather large AUX tranny cooler fitted. I know for sure it needs new hatch struts. Hopefully they wont be too hard to source.

I plan on trying to fit a newer Subaru 6 disk double din head unit and under seat sub. I promised I would mod this one but I did make the concession of adding a nice stereo system.

My family and I are fairly new to Panama City, Fl. We were stationed here from RAF Lakenheath UK. I think I have only spotted one other SVX (green?) since living here in NW Florida.

Anyway I hope to fit in nicely here and see where this goes.

Steven aka Bonestock

Welcome to the Network, Steven!

First of all, if your car is an LS-L, it has the touring package (power leather seats, sunroof, etc.)

You can get the trunk struts from Subaru. 17 years of use lifting a heavy trunk and spoiler wrecks havoc on these. Here are the part numbers.

57521PA000 Stay Trunk, Right
57521PA010 Stay Trunk, Left

You can pick them up from your local dealer (probably Buzz Leonard Subaru on 15th St.) or order them from subaruparts.com for $46.36 each plus shipping. There have been aftermarket trunk strut mods done on the network, but only the factory design allows the trunk to open a full 90° vertically.

You'll find a wealth of information here and in the How-To Documents link on the top right of the page. Don't be afraid to ask.

Spent quite a bit of time at Tyndall AFB in the 60's. You'll love Panama City Beach and the Miracle Mile.

Also know that the weather in Florida will be a welcome change from Lakenheath. I have visited there when I was over in the UK, assigned to GCHQ in Cheltenham and RAF Menwith Hill, outside of Harrogate.

Re: "old" newbie here

Welcome Steven!

Hopefully you will buy the car, post pictures when you do.

Incidentally you mention black on black. The Ebony Mica cars are probably the only cars from '92 that have the one colour all over. The roof and bootlid will be Ebony Mica as well, look closely you will see the red metallic particles.

For all other colours that year the black roof would have been plain old solid black, with the rest of the body colour being metallic or pearlescent paint.

Just FYI.

Re: "old" newbie here

Were they out in '92 Mike? They probably were at that.

If you check out Earl's colour charts from the registration figures you will see that Teal is one of the rarest colours. In world terms Ebony is second only to Silver in popularity, but Teal is nowhere.

Yes, the greens were out in 92. I had read about the SVX and seen the pics of the concept car, but the first REAL SVX that I saw was a green that passed me on the beltway around Atlanta. Even though the greens are my least favorite color, I was truly impressed with the looks of the car. I was definitely in love and bought my first one new just a couple months later.

Yes it has the leather, pwr drivers seat and sunroof.

I'll have to get my parts from Jamie (subigal on NASIOC) at genuinesubaruparts.com Buzz is a huge no no. They ran their Mitsu franchise into the ground and Mitsu gave it to the dealer across the street! Then they became "Buzz the ALL AMERICAN DEALER" with Chrysler/Jeep. Then lost that and became "Buzz the NAPA certified used car super center" and now Subaru. This all happened within 8 months. Thanks for the part numbers though!

I loved England. We where there for 4yrs and it was so much fun. I'd go back tomorrow if I could.

I leave in 1hr to go get my SVX!!!! I'm genuinely excited... how interesting.

Re: "old" newbie here

Well I got the car today. I did a quick clean up in the dark and changed the oil. I found the LF CV boot was torn and had slung grease everywhere. I looked as if it had just occurred.

Quick list of faults:
Hood struts will not hold the hood up
LF CV boot torn
Dome light INOP (I push the room button but it doesnt work although the floor and door lights come on)
Spare tire, jack and lug wrench missing
Oil is weeping out of the timing belt cover, typical Subaru!
Every single speaker is blown

Thats it... not bad for such an old car!

Quick pics:

Re: "old" newbie here

Good luck not modifying the car. lol. It will be hard, especially when you find out how easy the members here have made it to convert the car to a manual. Other members have developed kits that make the coversion only slightly harder then a straight bolt in. I'm running an 04 JDM STi tranny and have a supercharger kit installed on the stock engine, plus enough engine parts in my garage to do a fully built motor with forged internals.

(hmmm, jst noticed I need to change my signiture. The Honda has been replaced with a Suzuki and the Montero was replaced with a Camaro SS.)
