Wont shift from Park

So a few days ago I got my oil changed, then yesterday I got my wheels rotated and the car aligned. Now, the car started up just fine and it worked at first, then the heater cut off. So I turned the car off and back on to see if this would fix the problem. It didn't, but now the car wouldn't shift from Park?! I eventually got it to go and it was running fine. Later that day the same problem where the car wont shift from park. What could this be?

Re: Wont shift from Park

Will the shift selector just not physically move out of the park position? If so, the shift lock could be malfunctioning.

Re: Wont shift from Park

While I don't have a solution, the way I put mine in gear is pressing the button immediately ahead of the shifter on the console. I think it is labeled "manual". I don't have the car with me to confirm the label. A tow truck driver did it the first time when I lost all battery power with an alternator short and main fusable link blown. This allowed him to push me off the freeway where I managed to put a wire in for the fusible link and restart the car.
There should be a click when the brake is pressed and the car is running. That is the neutral safty switch closing to allow you to move the shifter. If you don't hear the sound, that may be it.

Re: Wont shift from Park

Sounds like the Shift Lock button might need to be pressed, or it is somehow malfunctioning.

the manual button is on the shift lever. The shift lock button is on the base of the shifter.

Two hands to both press the normal shifter ratchet release, and the other hand to press the shift lock button on the base... it might work. Having the ignition turned to the "on" position, even if the engine isn't running, might not hurt, either.

Re: Wont shift from Park

I figured out what is wrong. The switch that should be moving when the brake is pressed in isn't releasing. I took it apart and pushed it in myself and got my car home. Any ideas why this would be malfunctioning?

It's not like I told you that or anything. It's malfunctioning because it's old. Things break.

Then how come some things continue to function that are old, Mr Green?

How come some new things don't function?

Re: Wont shift from Park

Do 94's have the shift lock override button? If so, just push that while shifting out of park. The shift lock unit (a little electronic box under the center console) is likely toasted. My car is the same, I've lived with it for over a year. *shrug* Subaruparts.com lists them at $108. I'm sure someone here can sell you one for much less.

Re: Wont shift from Park

Has someone verified that the OP isnt talking about the brake light switch? If that isnt functioning, theres nothing to tell the shift lock to disengage.

The OP should press his brake pedal and see if his brake lights come on before tearing apart his center console.....

Re: Wont shift from Park

I might have to take you up on that this weekend as I have found more things not working. So the shift lock isn't working, cruise control not working, the heater will turn on but wont blow, and the horn doesn't work. I have checked all the fuses that it could be and they are all fine. All of them went out at the same time so they must be connected I just can't seem to figure out how.
