Mounting a fan to transmission cooler mounted in fender

Hi all,
My 92 Silver has the transmission cooler installed as in the SVXWN How-to:
http://www.svxworldnetwork.org/html/index.html
Has anyone added a fan to theirs?
My options appear to be :
6" or 7.5" diameter push fan mounted in front of it, or a pull type mounted behind it...if the fan will fit...
Thoughts, comments appreciated...

Re: Mounting a fan to transmission cooler mounted in fender

how big is your tranny cooler?
my first svx had two small tranny coolers..
and my second had a larger one..probably 3 times the size of one of the small ones in my first..
i thought that was good enough...
as long as the car is in motion ...cooling should occur, right?

it's kind of like the idea of a front mount intercooler...it's away from heatsoak but with it being in the front..the car in motion will cool the air ~

Re: Mounting a fan to transmission cooler mounted in fender

Hayden Transaver

Plate-type
Core: 7.75" x 11.00 x .750"
Overall 9.5" x 11.00 x .750"

Installation looks identical to how to.

Found nice fans here:
http://www.the-fan-man.com/shop/spal...d96db7404c4a35

Thinking of adding Perma-cool transmission filter at same time...maybe LED wired inside car to show operation, relay kit, etc.

I travel on gravel and other loose road surfaces, don't want to cut a hole in the liner

Problem with that is, even with a fan you are recirculating the hot air already trapped in the fender from the cooler. You would be better off with a large cooler between the rad and a/c condenser

Re: Mounting a fan to transmission cooler mounted in fender

Maybe I'll be relocating it then, when I install the transmission filter...is there any downside to the Perma-cool style filter?

Re: Mounting a fan to transmission cooler mounted in fender

By the dimensions of your cooler I think it is a 30,000 GVW cooler. If you put it between the rad & a/c condensor as YT recommended, you will be fine. I have 2 coolers this size in that spot, I also by passed the rad cooler. When I first by passed the rad cooler I got a 20° drop. So far with 2 coolers the operating temp is 30° cooler than with a single cooler. I'm in the desert, this time of year it's 100°-115° every day, in Conn, you should be good to go with one cooler.

If you install a temperature gauge and sensor in the Perma Cool filter mount, the wires can go thru a soft rubber spot in the firewall that is about 1.5" in dia. The soft rubber seals the wires. Perma Cool has 2 versions of the filter mount, be sure to get the one you can install the temp sensor in.

The only down side is the bolts from Perma Cool are lag bolts. If you use the largest filter that fits the filter mount you will be doing your tranny & fluid a very big favor. I had a fluid exchange done (synthetic atf) in 2001, 40,000+ miles ago, I have changed the spin on filter every 7,000 miles, the fluid is as bright pink as it was when installed, no smell of burning.

Re: Mounting a fan to transmission cooler mounted in fender

perma cool #12511 comes with the fan.

unfortunately if you live in the salt belt you have to keep it clean in the winter or remove it. Salt will kill the fan motor yearly.
I ran it like this for a long time with no fenderliner.

immortal_suby, is your fan a pusher or a puller? Sorry if you said before and I missed it.

Re: Mounting a fan to transmission cooler mounted in fender

I think this is a pretty good set up specially when you are stuck in traffic or going slow where you cant get enough air going thru the cooler( I used B&M trany cooler mounted in front of ac condensor).
How did you wire the fan switch? Is the motor pretty much water proof? Whats the trany temp. are you getting with this set up?
Thanks

Significant Technical Input
Re: Mounting a fan to transmission cooler mounted in fender

I have a plate and fin cooler in the drivers fender with a fan on it controlled by an in line thermostat installed in the line between the transmission output and the cooler. I have the fender liner installed--a hole cut in the angled part of the bottom for an inlet and a hole cut high in the top for an outlet. I posted pictures and part numbers somewhere but don't remember where.

This set up functions well in everyway. Comes to temp fine and then runs 176 degrees no matter what without soaking the radiator with the heat from the trans fluid.

Re: Mounting a fan to transmission cooler mounted in fender

I don't remember if it pushed or pulled. It's currently on my dad's svx and 800 miles away. I had one on mine also but swapped it out for a bigger cooler without fan last year in the same spot. I had it wired to come on with the ignition IIRC. The motor didn't seem to have a problem with water, just salt.
I also have a BM 70255 in front of the condenser and the stock radiator cooler is bypassed.
In any event, even with 2 coolers and the fan running, a good hill or some aggresive stop and go traffic could still push the temp way up. The fan cooler at least got the temp to cool down some at a stop. Sounds like Mike's setup works better than mine did if his keeps the temp that low.
