manual trans interchange

OK, without getting into too much detail, I need to replace my 5MT....again. I'm interested in the posibility of getting a lower milage tranny this time, Thing is that most of the lower milage trannies are the hydraulic type and I've got a cable actuated clutch. I'm wondering if anyone has ever attempted to remove the slave cylinder from a hydraulic-clutched tranny and install the cable stay bracket instead. I know going the other way (cable to hyd.) would be tough because the slave cyl. bolts into the top of the bell housing. I don't happen to have a hydraulic operated tranny to look at for reference so I'm hoping that someone can either answer the question for me or post some fairly detailed pics of the top of one for me.

Thanks,
Jay

P.S. I know the difference between a push type and pull type clutch setups. I'm referring to the push type hydraulic setups.

If you can clarify what pics you want, I have a spare hydraulic type sitting in my garage right now.

yes you can. Just use the cable bracket and use the cable release fork. As far as I know this should be the only thing you need to change. You cannot use a pull type clutch trans found in WRX, turbo legacy, and STI vehicles. Might I suggest actually converting to a hydro setup for future compatability issues. Cable trannies may be cheap but eventually you may grow tired of swapping trannies, I know I did and finally jumped for a 6 speed

Thanks Tom for the quick answer. I'm probably not going to change over the pedals etc, if it's this easy to convert a tranny from hyd. to cable. If I ever do a manual swap again I'll probably try to go with a pull type tranny from a WRX which will hopefully be more durable. I'll also have less to worry about when doing the swap, like sourcing a good clutch. The only thing I'll probably miss will be the 4.111 ratio diffs since the WRX uses the 3.545 rear.

Anyway, I digress. SVX10, I'm still interested in having those pics for reference. The area I'm looking for good pics of is from the top of the tranny, near the bell housing where the slave cylinder mounts back to about the middle of the top of the tranny. This would include a few of the case closure bolts and the clutch fork entry area.

Thanks again,
Jay
