Re: New How-To Document Forum

I've got a question. I skimmed through a number of the pdf files and noticed that a good deal of them are simply one or two page pdf files of just text. Could we, over time, get the contents of those pdf files posted into the thread instead of linked?

I know that'll take even more work and I wouldn't expect it done immediately, but that way the information would be right there without the additional step of downloading and opening another file, and then the contents would be searchable through the forum search function.

If not, the data there is already awesome - I'm by no means complaining.

I'd actually prefer the ones that are just text be updated with pictures and made 100% idiot proof.

I do like the option of having them ALL be in the pdf format so that all the info for one job is in one document that can easily be printed and taken out to the garage. And like I said, I hope as people use these we can add more pictures and details to them as well.

Good point on the searching though. Maybe there is a way to add "tags" to them that the search function can pick up?

And of course with this great organization Earl has done, once someone figures out what they need to do they can easily find it just by browsing through the structure.

Re: New How-To Document Forum

How do you suggest we go about making things 100% Troy proof?

I heard that was an impossibility...

Kia ora Troy,

Do not become disheartened. Your efforts to ensure that the how too section is 100%, are very much appreciated and worthwhile. In my opinion this section is the most important element within the network. I will certainly be happy to join you in achieving your goal.

Sincerely, Trevor.

So will I Trevor!

First we have to try it the way it is now. Then we can add or improve it as we go. I have learned how to do some things better and will go back and fix them as soon as I get the first round done. We will add and organize or fix things that aren't as good as we like. This is a work in progress and at least we can add and edit these now. The old How-To Doc link in the upper right hand page can not be edited or added to at all. We can do that to this one now. It will just take some time to figure out what is best. I am always open to suggestions with the format that we have now. Thanks for all of the comments.

Absolutely great that things will be able to be edited. Very often, as a result of experience and comment by users, an existing item can be improved over time.

Special thanks for your efforts, Trevor.

Re: New How-To Document Forum

I have started a new account for the How-To Forum so that my signature is not so big and will cut down the clutter. I hope that this will help some too.

Now I have to go back into the site and replace all of them with this account.

Look at the transmission subfolder to see some of them that I have changed. I am also including the type of post that it is. It will be a doc if it is a pdf file, or an image if a picture or image.

I second that! Searching is good.

There's no need to toss the PDFs -- they can remain as an easy way for people to download and print the document. Just be sure to always update each PDF at the same time you update the forum text. Perhaps the filename could include the date at the end (e.g., "xxxx_20100410.pdf").

I also strongly recommend including a conspicuous note in the post saying that the PDF contains exactly the same text as the post (so people don't download the PDF unless they really need a portable copy -- save the site some bandwidth).

Short of posting the full content, it would be very helpful to post a synopsis with keywords that will catch searches.

Re: New How-To Document Forum

Can we input some good non-OEM parts suppliers for others if they wish to deal with?
