new svx owner, have a few questions

Well I recently joined the SVX world. And I love it so far. Great car, fun to drive but some things definitely need to be done on it. Some of my questions I'm sure there are writeups around on the web, but I'd rather get responses from people who have personally done it and have good results with it.

1. Open Air intake - K&N cone filter? If so does someone have a part number and tips on whether to leave the air filter in the engine bay, or mount it sticking into the fender where the air box plumbing sits behind the bumper? And what was used to mount the filter to the MAF assembly? On the Loyales we would use two MAF sensors bolted back to back since they have the other end that filter fit perfectly over.

2. Exhaust system setup? I will be replacing my cats with new cats because I have access to a welding shop and cheap cats, but from there on back what size of exhaust are you guys running? I was leaning towards 2.5 inch from the cats back but having it go back into a single pipe and then splitting back out to duals at the bumper (muffler removed of course) the going back to single pipe for a bit to for scavenging effect.

3. Aftermarket Cams? I'm wanting low end cams, order Delta cams? or does someone have another supplier thats decent?

This will get me started, I'm sure I'll have more questions down the line.

Thanks guys I appreciate any answers

Re: new svx owner, have a few questions

Welcome

To answer your questions no, there's no SVX specific K&N or any other aftermarket filter, everything's custom. That being said you can either get custom and route the piping into the fender or just get a MAF adapter which lets you mount a filter right to the MAF.

Exhaust? 2.5, unless you're doing a serious build. Any more than that and it will get really loud and start hurting your low end.

As far as cams go, Delta's probably the cheapest. From what I've heard Web cams are more expensive but they do better quality regrinds? Just send Delta your intake cams and away you go. I'm not sure if LAN's still selling stuff but check out ecutune.com. He's got parts specifically for the SVX.

There are people on this sight that have a ton of experience with these and I'm sure they'll chime in.

I didnt catch it about a cone filter, I thought he was talking about no K&N at all, no drop ins. I actually had all the pieces for a fender mount cold air intake from Kragens, the day before I crashed the front end. They sell all the different degree elbows and maf adapters.

Re: new svx owner, have a few questions

Alright so what ended up doing Saturday was just getting rid of the muffler and making up piping to keep the dual tips from the single pipe (basically made a Y where the muffler bolted up) It seemed to help a bunch getting rid of that 40 lb muffler. Car seems peppier, but now it sounds waaaaay too ricey. I'm going to have to figure something else out to do with it.

I snagged a ECU and TCU out of a 95 we have at the shop. I know the 92 was problematic with the ECU needing to be modded. Am I better off modding my 92 computer or just plug/play the 95? And is there any change in the TCU from an early 92 to a 95?

Ensteele I'm in Interior Alaska.

As for the cams, if I cant just buy new ones, I'm going to have to at least get a spare set of stock cams and send those in to be reground. I want to keep a set of stock cams around, incase I dont like how the regrinds act.

Just do the bead crush mod on the 92 ECU, it's realllyyy easy, takes around 2mins to do if you have the ecu out of the car, and it's an approved TSB from Subaru, not some snake-oil fix.

Re: new svx owner, have a few questions

There are changes in the TCU from 92 to 95. These are not to the main shift maps and changing it won't really do you any good. The TCU does not need modification for durability of the trans unit but that may be the case at a later date as this information is in the process of being sorted out from the control unit. Perhaps someone else has a different opinion but I would leave the TCU with the transmission as a set.

Re: new svx owner, have a few questions

Yeah I wasnt sure about the TCU, It fell down with the ECU when I pulled it today so I figured its in my hand, might as well take it

I will put them in my loyale storage locker and keep it for spares.

As for some other mods I've seen on the web:

SVXfiles's "20-Minute Mod" - Something to do with the rear sway bar mod. If its a part that can be bought at a local parts store, I'm interested. Ordering stuff up here in Alaska is a pain because of the shipping, so I try to stay local if I can, but if I have to order it from him, not a problem either

And I will be going on the hunt for the rear diff bushing part tommorow when I'm at work. Did the 9005 Lowbeam thing tonite with Silverstar 4000k bulbs, big difference in lighting. With the 100 watt fog light bulbs I put in also, I can actually see at night now.

Is there any other small tricks that I'm missing that need to be done on the car?
