In my younger years, I owned a 1966 Corvette coupe. Silver Pearl paint and silver interior. 327cu.in./350 hp. with a 4 speed close-ratio manual. No knockoff wheels or sidepipes... but it had the big 36 gallon tank! (one of 66 produced that year).

I rarely filled the tank up. Three reasons:

36 gallons is a lot of weight to haul around if you intend to engage in some impromptu street racing. Great to have all that weight over the rear wheels, but weight is still weight

36 gallons of gas in a fiberglass car was basically a rolling Molotov Cocktail, waiting to be lit. I can only imagine having a serious accident and having the car light up and me in it.

But the main reason was...

I had better things to do with a $10.00 bill on a friday night than fill up the tank! (In 1966, gas was around .31/gallon)

High performance cars and cheap gas. A scenario never again to be repeated.
