Re: People to watch out for

Regarding the VIN - when I originally tried to register the car it came up with an error due to the japanese car having a short vin number - All I had to do was have an insurance agent witness the Vin on the engine and frame (only 2 locations was required) and then once accepted she continued the insurance process with an override - A few days later I received a registered letter stating the insurance company accepted the short VIN.

Since it currently is the only right hand drive in BC the RCMP registered a custom VIC (vehicle information code?) for it, the short one they one-handed hammer into their onboard computers which brings up all the registration, owner information etc. I didn't have to do anything for this, they just did it and sent it, saying that because it was the only one they had to create it.

The idea as stated before is that I would just drive it right across the border to its destination, and leave it there - returning in something else or try to explain to the TSA why I was flying one way

This thread has really expanded with some good information - keep it rolling guys.

I am not kidding either, I have all the vin plates and tags off a car we junked... Clean title... A short while back I had thought about importing one for myself... Finances did not allow but I was preparing for it

Tom
I was thinking that you just swap the vin plates and then say that you converted it to RHD. Same effect, but much easier. Maybe strategically change some parts of it to make it seem like it was converted.

I think that is what Tom was driving at. Shhhhh...this is certainly not legal. And its all about plausible deniability.

Re: People to watch out for

The US Customs guys are not stupid. Not all at the same time anyway. IF they decide to investigate, they will scrutinise it very carefully and they WILL figure out that it's not a USDM car.

From what I've read, they would impound and dispose of the car. Depending on the circumstances, the owner might get away with just a slap on the wrist (apart from the loss of the car).

But if the owner has tried to cover up by tampering with the VIN, falsifying documents etc, they would end up in a lot more trouble.

Better to keep the car untampered IMHO. Most importantly, don't give the authorities any reason to investigate. Keep it under wraps and pretend it doesn't exist.

Phil.

Re: People to watch out for

which makes the "drive it here and fly home" all the better. Once it is here then the car could be "vin converted"

Re: People to watch out for

Here's a very interesting thread: http://www.gtr.co.uk/forum/99254-r32...-any-help.html

Quote:
I just had homeland security come to my house (after owning the car for about a week, (agents said it was just bad timing on my part nothing triggered it i just owned the car at the time)) in Houston, TX and tell me that my gtr was illegally imported and needs to be seized. They said that they are cracking down on all "illegal" skylines in the country and it was part of some big skyline investigation or some crap. I have the seizure warrant if anyone wants proof.

By "illegal" they mean r32's and 34s without DOT bond releases. There is NO WAY for me to get it back as a race car, show car, offroad, etc. The car is not technically significant, prepped for track, etc to qualify for those sections, so i am being forced to export it. Lets not get into the debate about legal versus not legal in this thread. I was just another one of those guys who thought that titled, registered meant legal, but now i know after talking with many head honchos at DOT.
Sorry for all the negative posts. I'm not trying to discourage anyone from buying this car. Just to dispel any myths that the legal problems associated with owning a JDM car in the US can be easily overcome. Dayle and Earl will have done their research and know this stuff already. It looks like a very nice car and I know that whoever buys it will treasure it. I wish them both the best of luck.

There you go, picture of ICE officer posing with seized car. These are real people with jobs to do.

Transporting a non-compliant car across the border, and storing a non-compliant car in a barn under a car cover could result in future problems down the road. Once the 25-year limit passes, how would one prove how/when/where the car legally entered the country? Where is the customs clearance? Who was the Registered Importer? Where is record of the bonding? The car had to enter somewhere and at sometime, and customs paperwork is necessary. Border agents keep records.

The scary part was posted earlier, insurance. If any person or any person's property was ever damaged, a good attorney would investigate. The insurance company would investigate. There is no defense whatsoever for operating a non-compliant vehicle unlawfully imported, and even less defense if one altered the VIN to obtain registration. The result would would be personal ruin. Further, if the car can't be driven, why bother?

Basically, every thought process to skirt the law will eventually result in legal problems.

More fun at the border.

Re: People to watch out for

Interesting link.

That Cizeta has a UK license plate, so I ran a DVLA vehicle enquiry on it. It was built in 1995, imported into the UK in 1999 and is still registered here, not listed as exported. According to DVLA records, it's Grey and has a 4994cc engine (Actually Red and 5995cc).

The most ironic thing is that as only 8 were ever made, the owner could have made it USA legal under the show and display law. But they didn't and now they've lost it.

Re: People to watch out for

I can understand this with a car that was never imported... But the SVX was... it is merely a model change. It is structuraly the same car... Done right, it would be nearly impossible to determine it was not infact a "converted" car
