The oil holes for the pins are probably offset or something. I just follow the directions when I use the stock rods.
I believe that the rods have a cast 'bump' near the pin end, the bump side installs forward

Re: Engine Build

Just an update.

I received my new (used) engine. It looks like it was never used (or steam cleaned). Seems to be in good shape. I will pull the pan to look for obvious problems, do a compression test on the stand. If that looks OK, I will look to only mod the top end. Based on my budget, It looks like I will put in cams that will work with my stock valve train, replacing the injectors with 370CC size from ebay, replace the mass air flow meter. I bought the 1v5 ECUTUNE software, and plan to upgrade to the 2v7 with new PROMS. Also plan to get a new transmission control unit.

This should bring me to about $1900 in the engine (not including the 900 I paid for the used engine, 650 + 250 shipping) I hope to invest some in the exhaust after the engine is in.

Any input from anyone who has the ECUtune cams?? Still looking for an intake. I saw the one for sale on the network, but I would rather have one that is complete.

Brian,
Suggestion. Since you've purchased the 1v5, why not drive with it for a while before investing in the Z32 MAF and 370 injectors (both only needed when going to the 2v7 chip)? You could use the $ for some p-n-p of the heads (intake and exhaust sides -- exhaust side should see the most attention). You should also seriously consider having the head gaskets replaced while the engine is out of the car.

Re: Engine Build

Bill,

Thanks for the suggestion. Since your post, I found a racing shop about an hour from me (I live near LaCrosse, WI) who is set up with a full port and flow test bench and will take a look at what I have. Soooo, my plan is to drop in the used engine without mods (other than ECUtune 1v5 and TCU) and take the heads off my extra engine. Have these reworked if reasonable enough, and then put on the lower mileage engine in the car. Other than concentrating on the exhaust ports, is there any specific advice to tell them about porting these heads. I think this will be their first time with these specific heads. Or, should I look to send them to an experienced shop. And where is there one in the midwest?

Thanks,

Brian

Re: Engine Build

Brian,
Check with TOMSSVX and RallyBob - PM and "Search Threads" - wise. The intake side can use a simple port match and polish. The exhaust side has "issues". This will become evident to you as soon as you take a look down the exhaust ports.
Make sure the shop you use can spell Subaru Make sure the heads are flat and get a good 5 angle valve job.

Significant Technical Input
Re: Engine Build

That sounds like a lot of extra work and a lof of extra fluid if you don't keep and re-use the coolant and oil. It sounds like you're impressed with how the salvage yard engine looks and want to put it in without messing with it. So ya, maybe do that. I'd probably go ahead and replace the valve cover gaskets and grommets and the caps over the ends of the intake camshafts so the engine doesn't spring any leaks. But you can do that without having to take off the timing covers and components etc etc.

Then you can build the other engine at your convenience as a hobby. You don't want to take both engines apart at the same time and create time pressures to get your mess cleaned up and an engine back in your car.
