Exterior drivers mirror question...
Can the glass mirror be replaced? How does it come apart if it does?

I have raised this question without a reply and so became involved in wrecking a mirror to find out the answers. The assembly is very, very difficult to strip down and the key to it all is a screw beneath the mirror glass, so that it would appear that the glass is fitted during assembly, as the last item. It is retained by the grooved edge of the plastic backing piece and at first sight would appear impossible to replace without breakage. However a local glass specialist, fitted a new mirror for me no problem, by using a heat gun to soften the plastic, as they do with all automotive mirror replacements. The original is convex so as to increase the field of view and I had to accept a normal flat mirror. Mine was on the passenger side so not so important. It should be possible to get a mirror cut slightly small, so at fit inside the groove and then fix it place with a suitable thick adhesive, if you do not have access to to a glazing shop. I hope you can sort it out, Trevor.

I have seen replacement mirrors for sale from time to time, but didn't know how it was done. It is too bad that you had to wreak a mirror to find out, but at least we know now.

Hiya,
The JDM heated mirror glass is available from Subaru, if I remember rightly there was green or light smoke tint options, we had to order 1 for the 1st SVX we imported some 4 or 5 years ago. Darren

For most home handymen, it's probly better to replace the whole assembly. Try finding a used one. If it isnt the same color, you can likely have it painted easier than it would have been to replace just the glass.
hope you get your mirror sorted out

Guess what!!! They ain't glass!!!
I took a shot and thought maybe a little buffing with scratch remover and polish would make the scratches better. I was right....to a point. I was having great success removing the scratches. However one was a little deeper and I was now in the mindset to create a perfect surface.
Well, I went too far by two or three swipes. All of a sudden a dark smoke type of color started to surface then "Oh Nooooo!!!" the light brown color of the backing was showing thru!! Ruined, I could not believe I had done this. I mean how was I going thru all the way thru the mirrored surface? I am used to the mirrored silver to be on the back and the glass on the front. That is for a glass mirror. This can't be glass. Obviously I couldn't have buffed thru truely a glass surface, just by finger pressure anyhow. Well, I have and the backing surface is indeed showing through. So I have ordered a glass mirror from Carparts Wholesale. I am now going to find out the hard way how to replace this thing. So if you have some light (I repeat light) scratches...they can be buffed out, just don't go too far. I was really giving it my all, I just was really elated that I was indeed getting rid of the scratches. I saw no signs of any layer rub thru, such as you might get when rubbing thru clear on paint. I have never seen one broken, so this may be why.

The auto glass company I work in administration for employs a product called "Burco Redi-Cuts", which are essentially, custom-cut mirror glass replacements for most vehicles.($25-$35) At the shop, most technicians adhere these replacement glass over existing damaged glass (if it is still intact) and if the mirror is shattered, the technician would remove the remnants and adhere the new mirror with adhesive, usually Sika-Tack Urethane (heat and apply).
It is a relatively easy way to replace that broken glass instead of sourcing an entire assembly. (For most cars, at least) I hope this helps.
