There isn't anything to it, there are a couple options, Autoloc makes one specific for this purpose, but it is about $40. Since whatever I do is going to be covered by the panels in the trunk, I can cheat a little. I'm going to take any non-power antenna from something in the junkyard and attach it to the underside of the trunk lid. If reception isn't good enough, I can always add an amplifier.

Just a note for anyone else considering shaving the antenna, plugging the hole in the top of the quarter that the antenna came through is necessary, I'm just going to use a rubber plug like the ones already filling holes in that area under the trim.

Re: Shaved door handles

I assume with all these visual mods you're going more for the show car look as opposed to practicality, but I'm still left wondering about the washer nozzles. Are you replacing them with a wiper arm mounted sprayer, or just praying it won't rain? I've been especially curious lately though as it seems Colorado has very suddenly been moved to the middle of some strange Central American rainforest... but with tornadoes.

Re: Shaved door handles

You should fill in the emblem holes while your at it. It looks better with the shaved handles and no washers.

Not really a show car look, just a cleaner look. Things that stick out and draw attention away from the shape and lines of the car are ugly and if they can go away, they should.

I'll either put the washers on the wiper arms or hide them in the cowl. Not really a concern, the only time I need them is in the spring when the pollen is really bad.

Nothing I am doing is going to really be impractical, everything is just kinda being relocated. The only thing I have truly eliminated is the door locks, which are kinda useless without door handles.

I've considered it, but I have also considered the Japanese Alcyone emblem. I guess I can always shave them now and if I decide to get that emblem, I can cut the nubs off the back of it and use some trim tape.

EDIT: Emblem holes are gone.

Re: Shaved door handles

so with all the poppers and all that added in weight how much crap will need to be added to be able to pop the doors with a button???

I don't know if I for sure would want to remove my handles or the locks, but as far as the antenna and installing poppers I'd totally be interested.

Also, when you talk about the trunk are you talking about the stock trunk or a replica you made or will make??? I'd definitely be interested in a lighter version of the trunk and trunk poppers.

So when it's all said and done, the entire install how much do you usually charge customers to do this kind of body work???

Also one more question, on the video the door barely pops open is that as far as it will pop when it's all said and done or will it pop a bit further?

Is it possible when combining with say for example a lambo door kit such gt factory you could get the doors to completely open??? just curious.

Maybe 5lbs if you add up everything including the wire, it'll probably work out about even since I removed stuff. There really isn't that much involved in making a door open with a solenoid.

It all depends on the car, of course. To do another SVX, if we have it in the shop for paint and body work anyway, an extra $400 plus the cost of the solenoid and remote kit is about what it would be. It is pretty routine stuff really.

It will only go out as far as it needs to to clear the latch, where it is in the video will be pretty much the final product, you don't want it to swing out too far and hit something. There is more than enough room to get your fingers in to open it.

Anything is possible.

Not really much point in it, but sure, it could be glued together and finished out. We have talked about making some custom fiberglass ones though.

Re: Shaved door handles

how much would it be just for the solenoid for the trunk and the kit? would someone be able to install this with just a how too, or is it quite complicated? I mean I did my own 5spd conversion and have done most of the rest of my mods myself. This couldn't be much harder right???

The solenoid to pop the trunk is going to be relatively cheap, since it doesn't have to be very powerful. I need to check with the company I usually get stuff from, but it should be $20-30. The control box and remotes I am using are from Spal, it is a basic 7 channel system with internal relays for the first 2 channels meant for the door solenoids.

It is pretty basic wiring, if you are using a channel without an internal relay, you'll need an external SPST relay, since the control box will fry if you try to pull more than 250ma. Installing the solenoid isn't hard, just make it pull the same thing the cable pulls, unless you did what I did and removed the lock, then make it pull what the lock used to pull.

I agree, when I installed Solenoids on the old Legacy Turbo, it was alot easier then I thought it would be when we got our kit (addon kit with our aftermarket Alarm)

Even the Remote Window Controls (to roll the windows up and down from remote) was very easy to install.

I never even bothered hooking up my antenna when I installed my nav unit. The only choices around here are Country and the Jesus station. I can't live without XM.

My choices when I am driving my Gremlin are gospel, something in Spanish or conspiracy theorists. AM radio sucks here, I need to cut it up and make it into a simple 2 channel amplifier and plug my MP3 player into it, but I haven't gotten a chance. One of the guys in the AMC club gave me a factory AM/FM radio, but it is beyond repair, I might just cut that one up. I want it to remain stock appearing, it is an mostly original car with barely over 30,000 miles on it.

For right now, I listen to the wind and a 232 I6 engine.
