Re: Emission test failed
I think others have basically covered it with the sujestion of: O2's, MAF, vac or exhaust leaks, bad cats, or old plugs. Didn't you have the t-belt done recently? The only other reach I could see would be leaking injectors or a faulty FPR.

(didn't take shorthand in HS 63 years ago) I did the t-belt (I don't have done) ... along with a new cam shaft, sprocket, valve cover gaskets. I also have done the new rollar kit with new water pump. The result of my labors was a vast improvement in the car but still have occasional ck enjine lite... code 37 which of course is a lie! on 3rd 02 sensor in the last few months should be good. (purchased all from Subaru) My Lubbock boys are going to show their west Texas hospitality to your Austin people today! Should be a great game if you like football! Take care, Keith |

Re: Emission test failed
Do you have the numbers from the test? If it is a minor fail, tune up stuff might do it. If it REALLY failed, then there are other issues.
What did they test for? |

Yours might not be bad enough to cause a noticeable stumble in the engine, yet.

Re: Emission test failed
Thanks again everyone.
I can clear the codes but after driving 10 t0 sometimes 20 miles i get a little stuttering miss, very little, and maybe the check injine light comes on... maybe not. If it comes on it is more apt to do it at 60-65 mph than 70-75. Seems if I am pushing the car runes better. If I am going about 65 and the check engine comes on I can do the petal to the metal and get in passing gear and before redline the check engine light goes off. If the light is on and I rive up the engine sitting still the check engine light does not go off. Car has to be moving along and petal to the metal shifting to a lower gear and the check engine light usually goes off. It might come on real soon but if I am driving pretty fast pushing a bit it stays off sometimes for 25 miles. Id does not ever come on before normal operating temperature is reached. Not then usually when I am pushing it down the road (freeway) 70ish Get off the freeway and slow down to city driving for 2-3 miles and it will usually come on again. After trying everything I decided to just live with it till the Lord comes back. It always starts easy (I did the Bosch relay over a year ago and it always starts like a dream) but then I got the emissions check notice and I knew I had a problem. Maybe someone has a clue from this information? I will do the coils swap thing and maybe that will cure me. ( I am thinking It is probably a blown head gasket.) Thanks, Keith... still |

Re: Emission test failed
To try the injectors, how do I get them off the car. I don't have to take them off in three's do I?
I tried to take one off a doner car but it didn't give so I left it alone... don't like to push things that I don't know about. I understand there are some "O" rings involved that might be stuck?? Keith |

Re: Emission test failed
low idle might be the sole cause, but usualy in the SVX's case low idle is one cylinder not behaving itself. Try the method of removing the wiring to the injector one at a time to see if one of the cylinders isn't working right.
If you want to just pass it through get the idle upto 800rpm, put in some "never fail" AKA alcohol, and get the car very very warm before the test and it should pass anyway. |

Re: Emission test failed
From the emission test numbers you posted, something just tells me the some kind of air restriction causing a rich mixture. Your air filter is fine? Have you checked your intake air pipe for any restrictions? Its wierd for it to be ok at idle but fail at cruise like that. Something is either starving the combustion chamber of air, which uses much less at idle, or is telling the computer to inject too much fuel for the air available when cruising. This is a toughie.

I have a fuel pressure regulator?
Incidentally, clazy Texan, did you happen to catch the Texas-Texas Tech football game yesterday? Keith |

How many miles on your SVX. My cats only lasted 200,000 miles.

Re: Emission test failed
given the readings, your cats are more than likely shot.
They are designed to reduce hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. make sure your pcv system is not clogged, pull the vacuum hose off of your regulator. look for gas in the vacuum line. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, get fancy and check for leaking injector and proper fuel p. regulator function. Did you get a nox reading too? Also check your egr. The pipe is more than likely busted/ or filled with carbon deposits. you can test that with a hand held vacuum pump. it needs to hold vacuum and the idle should change when its opened.
