New SVX with a few odd problems
I bought a '92 white svx off ebay 3 days ago. I already love this car but the more i look at it the more i discover it has slight kinks here and there.
Has anyone ever had a problem if you turn on the headlights there is a buzz that sounds as if it is coming thru the radio? It almost sounds like a frying wire sound but it seems to come from the speakers. Also the power steering has an issue. It will turn fine for about a quarter of a turn then stop assitsting so you have to really pull to get it to turn then it kicks in for another quarter then another hard spot. Sometimes at low speeds the power steering light will come on and stops assisting all together. The fluids are full, the seals were changed less than a year ago according to the paper that came with the car. It also has an annoying rattle while accelerating that ive already come to find to be the heat sheild (common i know) Also i was just curious while testing out the brakes i discovered the seat belts dont lock up for some reason (or at least not when you slam ont he brakes at 40) is there a problem or do they just take alot of force to lock up? I'm used to a '02 honda civic that locks up going around tight corners, maybe i'm just used to havign the seat belt cling to me. |

Welcome to the site.
Headlights and buzz. I haven't had that problem, but maybe someone else has. Steering - Is the resivor full, and is there any sign of a leak? I would check the o-ring and see if that helps. I have seen some on them like there was no power steering at all and after replacing the o-ring, you could turn the wheel with a finger. It takes more than that for the seat belts to lock up. I wouldn't worry about it. If you are on a slight hill, sometimes they will lock up. It is hard to test them. Good luck.

as for the powersteering. I suggest you make sure all of the connections for the sensors and such are good. May even need to replace the sensor on the pump. Also make sure that ATF fluid is being used rather than powersteering fluid. Our cars require ATF

The seatbelts on 92's take quite a hard stop to lock them up in my experience. Might be different on the later models with manual belts. Ditto on trying the O-ring fix for the power steering. If you need help working on it let me know.

I'm taking the svx up to the subaru dealership to have them do a diagnostic on the power steering. I did consider the power steering fluid being the issue as the man i bought from wasnt quite all there and he claimed to have changed it b/c of the problem, so it may just need the right fluids. The o-ring was changed a few thousand miles ago, i dont know if the problem started then or not but the owner sold it less than a month later, so maybe its incorrectly installed. Anyway thanks for your replies. I'll post pics once i get her cleaned up some more (flightiest car i've ever bought!) |

Dealers are notorious for throwing a new steering rack at any power steering problem. That will cost you quite a bit.
Just don't let them do that until you are positive the O-ring is good and the PS pump is good and the high pressure line is good.
