Oil change?
I'm trying to do an oil change in my 92 SVX, I just need some advice as to what type of oil is the best for the SVX, how much of it do I need? and what type of oil filter? and any other advice you may have for me.
Thanks |

First, How many miles do you have on your mean machine? Considering your actual mileage, I personally would try a high performance oil filter, like the K&N oil filter HP-1004, second you may want to use MOBIL1 Super Syn oil, 10w 30w. If your not interested in the synthetics, consider Valvoline. I think its about 5 quarts. You'll need to take off the drip pan underneath which is attached to the bottom bumper by 4-6 bolts. Take your time!

Hmm... 6.3 qts with filter. Buy 7 and always the best.

I have to agree, Synthetic is the way to go. You might experience a little "Seal Weep" at first, but the synthetic will add many miles to your 3.3!

My 1992 SVX has 96000 miles. Is it really worth getting dirty or just paying the $30.00 from Expressway?

Is that filter and synthetic oil included in that price?

If you change your oil every 3K...
...you probably won't need to use sysnthetic or synthetic blend oil. When Chevron Supreme, Havoline, Pennzoil Purebase 10W-30 SL oils are available for under a $, in some cases less than 0.60, you'll find a case will handle 2 X 6 quart changes.
Oil filters are often on sale at 2 for $5-6. I don't especially like Fram but some of the other inexpensive ones are really very good: WIX, NAPA Gold, Pennzoil PZ-33, Purolater, etc. The WalMart SuperTech filters are very highly regarded by some, and they are cheap. Say $6 for oil and $3 for filter and you can change it 3 times for under $30. The nice thing about a quickie-lube joint is that they actually do get underneath and check the levels in your diff's, etc. If you know who you are dealing with ("Did you want fries with that...?") that can be convenient. There is no question that synthetic oil is superior for longer intervals, in some cases substantially longer. MOBIL 1 is great oil! IMHO It depends on how many miles you actually drive in a year: AMSOIL AMO 10W-40 or AMT 10W-30 and a filter change and top-off every 6K miles should easily last for 18K miles per year. Say 8 quarts @ $5.70 + 3 filters at $3 + $54.60 And that's not a lot different costwize from 6 conventional D.I.Y.changes each 3K. Just less time getting dirty.

I was shocked. While I was at the dealer paying a million dollars for my O2 sensor, I decided to get an OEM oil filter at the same time.
I was prepared for a ransom amount, but it was only six bucks (Canadian!) (with a drain plug washer) |
