Tie Rods?
I dropped the car off this morning for a four-wheel alignment.. When I returned two hours later, I was informed that the alignment could not be completed because I needed a right-inner tie rod. They told me that they could order the part for about $70, and that it would take them about half an hour to install. Can someone point me to the part on subaruparts.com and tell me if it's possible for me to install it myself or with the help of a competent friend?

Item #4 RH, #5 LH It's not difficult with the right tools. Some cars are difficult to loosen the inner end from the rack due to its location and require a special socket. Plus you have to be careful to tighten the end only when you're holding the end of the steering rack from turning - a bit of overtorque and you can damage the rack.

Where do you guys find people that will install your parts? I haven't accepted that in years. McDonalds won't cook my hamburger. Oh well, to each their own, I guess.
Anyway, I need to know your year and model before I can answer that - there might be a difference.

Yup, #4 is all you need to replace the inner end.

Strictly speaking you need a new boot as well ($20), the old one is not designed to be removable, but could be persuaded to come off with some limited damage.

inner tie rod
well, took my car down to lentz today. they seem to think the same thing. I thought my allinment was off, but turns out the right inner tie rod has play it in, causing the car to shake and to pull to the side. ugg...

talk about resurrecting an old topic..
when I had them fix my tie rod, it would up costing just shy of $80, which included parts and labor.. Very reasonable if you ask me. I'm sure it's something you can do yourself though, but when it starts coming to suspension geometry, I kind of like to leave it in the hands of "professionals." I put quotes around that word because sometimes the local pros at my shop have made some pretty bonehead mistakes. In fact, I heard one account of a friend of mine walking in while they were smoking a joint on the floor. I've got exactly zero problems with smoking pot, but I think that it should stay AWAY from the workplace. I've been thinking about taking my vehicle elsewhere in the future. -Adam |
