Noisy??????

Just noticed (past week) since temp. dropped a whining noisy sound as soon as starting my 96 polo. Noise is more pronounced when car is cold, but can still be heard when warmed up. I tried to pin point where its coming from just from listening, and it seemed to be coming from the AC compressor, alternator area. Any ideas what it could be. Engine was resealed back in May, headgaskets in June, and svxfiles put on new drive belts. Could it be an idler pulley. Noise is present with or without AC/defrost on.
