Stock Wheels

Does anyone know the stock wheel weight? I have an interesting Turbo article that has dyno results of the hp loss due to increased wheel weight and overall diameter. I'll post the article if any1 wants to see it.

I remember reading a while back.....

about this same type of thing. The article pertained to drag racing and weigh reduction on front wheel drive vehicles. I guess the numbers do not jive with rear wheel drive, however not sure about AWD. Anyways this is what is said, BTW I also found this info in a few other places over the years.....

-1lbs of weight removed from behind the front drive wheels is equal to 1lbs of weight removed from the car (of course)

-1lbs of circular rotating weight (moving forward) was equal to removing 5lbs of weight from the car's body.

-1lbs of weight removed from ahead of the front wheels is equal to 10lbs of weight removed from the car's body.

You will notice a vast time difference while racing on different wheels. For example my sunfire running with 14" 17lbs wheels could run an approx 16.8s quater mile (yes that is quite slow I know).

After changing to 16" 20.5lbs wheels (from a Legacy GT) it became impossible to turn a quater mile in under 17.1s

These runs were actually done the same day, as my friend wanted me to prove the book was right. I personally could care less about the 0.3s I lose on the streeet, as compared to the nicer look and handling my 16's give me, but it's your choice. If you really look at vehicles that drag race (fwd anyways) you will see they have 2 different tire sizes. The front's being a 12"-13" x 11.5 (or so) wheel weighing less than 13lbs, and the rears being a 16"-17" x 6.5" (or so) wheel weighing as little at 9lbs. This will give them enough meat on the ground to keep the power down, yet keep them as absolutely light as possible.

Ok back to work now...enough novel writing for me.

can't remember weight

I did weigh my aftermarket wheels which are 1/2 inch narrower than stock and they weighed 1 lb more than stock! Maybe it was even two lb. From memory it was 14lb vs 16. So the originals are hard to beat for functionality. I know that they are easier to balance. Just so darn ugly!
