O/T: Heater doesn't work...
My friend have a Toyota Camry '90 V6 LE of which heater doesn't work. He asked me whether I know why and what part he should check ? If he has to take the car to the shop how much he could expect to pay for it done?
I told him I don't know but I'll try to ask this in this wonderful group. Hope that somebody may help. Thanks alot. Tony |

Does the heater work at all? As in does it produce heat after driving it more then long enough for the engine to heat up?
Or does it not heat even if the engine is heated all the way to normal? If its the first case, then it could be a thermostat problem and the engine just isn't heating up in the time he drives it. If its the second case, it could be a plugged heater core (like a valve in the core broke, etc). |

First item to check is to see if it is full of coolant. You'd be surprised how many cars I'll see this winter with that very problem. People won't know that their water pump is leaking like a sieve, but they sure know when the heater isn't working.
A '90 Camry v6 uses a heater control valve which may be disconnected or broken/plugged. It runs about $75 plus an hour's labor plus antifreeze. And as Kurt said it may be a thermostat or plugged heater core. Plugged cores can usually be cleared by removing a hose and blowing out with compressed air, but if the core is weak that could create a leak. The only proper repair for a leaking core is replacement, about $310 + 5.2 hours + antifreeze, etc.
