Re: Pi in the SVX

Carputer update

Fell back to win8.1 due to a very fast boot up. Got around to trial fitting the cage with the touch screen in the car. Had to re-re-re-modify the displays mounting in our spare cage. Also had to trim one corner (lower d/s) of the displays bezel to clear the radio door. Also will have to work up a bit of trim as the svx oem trim won't fit the displays bezel. The rear of the assembly won't win any tin knocker awards but it is functional.Actual PC will be located in the trunk spare tire well. Also have to reinstall an oem dash side radio connector as the previous radio insataller kluged it.Photos are below.

Re: Pi in the SVX

Finished installing the head unit and connecting the usb cables, power to and from the PC and VGA cable to it. Will work at the PC end (in the spare tire well) next good weather spell.
Pleased with the results so far. Windows 8.1, Ride Runner shell, directed digital FM receiver, backup camera, combined Bluetooth and wifi dongle, noise cancelling microphone, ECU tuner OBD1 reader software, Streets and Trips 11 navigation software and GPS puck.

Will activate the PC with a spare monitor first, then power up the USB hub in the head unit. After the hub is verified good will power the touch screen and then proceed to tweak the software.

How have you wired it for power? To avoid the power drain from smart and possibly abrupt shutdowns?

Used a vehicle specific PC power supply designed for ambulances and such. A DCX2.180 180W XTX OPUS Solutions Intelligent DC-DC power supply. Safe start up, battery voltage sensing, safe shutdown

Got a deal om ebay a bit back. Test the unit on a spare battery and it functioned as specified

Re: Pi in the SVX

After being very cautious on the wiring and testing at various stages of installation, we finally powered up the PC with the installed head unit. Still a lot to do. Groom the wiring in the trunk, tweak the software and integrate as much as we can. Sorry the attached photo is a bit out of focus.

Re: Pi in the SVX

Is this a car or a space ship? And what is all this going to do when finished ?

Re: Pi in the SVX

While this build is really awesome and also original, why didn't you just buy one of those newer head units that has nav, computer software, etc built into it already?

The SVX has always been our star ship(note the USDM hood emblem). We are going to keep doing work on it to keep us out of trouble (idle hands you know).

Re: Pi in the SVX

Hope some day to see it up close and personal.. We are only a few hours away and less at a 1/2 way agreed meeting place. Took mine on a 120 mile cruise. Wow I forgot how much torque it has as a 5 speed. Resting my foot on the gas and doing 70 in 5th. Stomp it an it is at 90 in a heart beat. No down shift, just GO!

Love to after we have that repainting done. Held off on the painting this fall as we are interested in a couple of Dayle's clones of JDM side skirts, split front air dam and rear wing. He is out of stock at the present time and no rush on the repaint.
