22mpg. ALWAYS.

I have a 92 Black Pearl LSL with 135,000 miles (driven 3000 miles in the past month and a week ), and no matter what, it seems I ALWAYS get 22mpg. Dammit. >:| The lowest MPG I got was 18mpg, doing around town driving. But on the highway? ALWAYS 22 MPG! Anything I can do to get 25?!

I don't know. Mine gets 22 mixed and about 29ish on highway. If you want a higher mpg car, might want to try the neon. That thing should give you over 30.

I get about 27 mpg on the highway if I drive between 70-75, and only about 22 if I bump it up to 80. I also get about 22 around town.

Have you tried slowing down?

I'm jealous, I get about 20-21 mpg on along highway trip @ 80-90 mph. I wish I could get better mileage, but I get really restless and antsy at anything less than 85, it just feels soooooo slow in the SVX. I somehow wrung out a 400-mile trip without filling up once, but I remember driving painfully slow (think 75-80 mph ) to get that, and being terrified of being stranded on the side of the road near the end of the trip. I somehow mustered enough balls and testosterone to keep going against every urge to fill up, just to prove I could do it. Thankfully, my hormones didn't screw me over that time, and I filled up something like 17 or 17.5 gallons when I finally got there.

That being said, I REALLY need a good reason to drive slow; obviously, the risk of losing my car if I get another speeding ticket isn't enough. (Don't ask me why, it just doesn't get through to my head that it could all be over with one more slip-up) So I'm hoping that the opportunity to save on gas money and see near-instant benefits to my pocketbook might be sufficient. Would anyone know what would be the optimal speed to drive the SVX at to maximize mileage?

Cool

It would seem to me the highest mileage attainable would be at the lowest speed at which 4th gear lock-up occurs. Stay away from hills while you're at it. Any SVX should be able average 27-30 mpg at a steady 70mph on level-ish terrain. My lowest mpg has been around 22 in a mix of highway/city driving with the A/C on. Pure city only stop 'n go will cost 'ya!

Ron.

TC lockup normally happens at or near 80kph (50mph) but doesn't unlock until about 70kph (44mph). This would theoretically make sense as this is the lowest gearing possible while using the least amount of pedal.

This is not always the case though. If the engine has to lug then it would definately comsume more fuel.

I get 10 MPG and my car runs better than ever...very smooth and SUB 7 sec 0-60 runs. 92 made in 10/91 with no upgrades i'm aware of. I have no idea whats causing the bad mileage, and no, it's not my driving.

The old owner used to fill it with less than premium...could it be the knock sensors or something?

I was in a similiar situation this past summer. I was averaging 13mpg in stop and go daily driving. After a sparkplug change, air filter change, and oil change last month, I now never get less than 20 mpg in daily driving. I'm up around 30 for highway cruising.

I'm thinking it was the sparkplugs. I had roughly 95k on the car and no knowledge of the plugs ever being changed by any previous owner.

My plugs were changed 4k miles ago. Could they have been changed wrong?

No, it's not my driving? What kind of comment is that? You've never checked your cars 0-60 run? Is that such an outrageous thing to do!?

If your plugs were changed improperly, I'd think you'd be able to feel it during driving, specifically during high RPMs. I know my svx drives a lot differently now after having those few things done to it than it did prior. Its high RPM shifts were incredibly rough before the work was done, and now they are flawless.

If the previous owner ran less than premium gasoline repeatedly, you may want to try dumping a fuel injector cleaner into the tank when next you fill up.
