Re: Transmission cooler system for all seasons
On another note; I have read mention of an external AT filter that was fitted to later cars.
When did that begin and where is that external filter mounted if it has been retrofitted? -Mike O |

Re: Transmission cooler system for all seasons
The ATK-50 campaign, as it was called, only affected certain 1992 SVX's
http://members.tripod.com/quick_svx/.../42748095.html The filter was mounted on the driver's side below the battery tray. After they removed the ATF mesh screen from the cooler inside the radiator and other upgrades, the filter was not installed in later years. It may still be available from Subaru 31099AA370....Use 31099AA031 $12.35 .

If I did add a filter it would be a spin on for a motorcycle. Honda and Yamaha both have filters with very small particulate filtering compared to most auto filters. I will be doing a flush on the AT this week in prep for the cooler install so maybe I'll send the fluid off to Blackstone to see what's what then decide about the filter. -Mike O Last edited by injuhneer; 11-05-2012 at 09:52 AM. |

The campaign filter was just a strainer. Harvey.

Alternately a full flow filter from a hydraulic application would work nicely. Lots of heavy equipment and aircraft hydraulic filters available but that defeats the purpose of being able to go to a FLAPS or bike shop to get a filter. Maybe I should combined the two and use a cartridge filter in a finned canister to double as a cooler. -Mike O |

Do you feel the add on ATF filters such as the Perma-cool which use a large oil filter have too much restriction?

The fluid flow can be calculated for the external components. As long as the filter exceeds the needed flow volume it won't impair the fluid. -Mike O |

Re: Transmission cooler system for all seasons
This cooler flow is not huge, fast or high pressure. It is the flow from the torque converter's regulated flow. As this is where all the heat is produced, so it goes to the cooler. From there it goes back to the box to feed into the main-shaft to cool and lube the gear sets and bearings.
You could use a strainer filter, if you want as long as it has adequate flow. The box manufactures fit a strainer on the pump pick-up, so they must think that this is all that is needed. The later box use another spin-on filter, but I don't know what type, or where it is situated in the flow circuit. Harvey.

Do you know the average operating temp of the ATF in these 4EATs? Maybe install a temp probe and take some data. -Mike O |

This was on a 26 mile run to work, involving hills and highway...outside temp was 68F. Bypassing the radiator cooler, using hayden plate cooler (without internal orificing for temperature control) installed in wing, 8" pull through SPA fan, 180F switch. Average was 194F, went to 204F speeding up long 10% grade. I'll post a pix if I can...

Re: Transmission cooler system for all seasons
Just a quick note - cruising at around 50-60 MPH with the ambient -5 C, the TCC will engage and release every 5 miles or so..... i.e. cycling on and off.... does anyone else experience this? The trans cooling is stock 1992 US Spec - no external filter installed (1996 JDM VTD tranny and firmware, though).
I trust this is due to "too much cooling" effect, eh? Tapani |
