EG33 and Piston Slap?

Hey gents, I'm having a nagging issue with my '96LSI. At 270+K mi it's developed a particular problem.

For the 1st 30sec, give or take, the engine knocks. Not anything like a death rattle, just a light tap. It's heavier than a lifter, but lighter than a rod. Are the EG's prone to the same piston slap that plagues the phase1 EJ25's, or is my engine just getting arthritic with age?

Re: EG33 and Piston Slap?

I have heard it... It usually lasts longer than 30 sec.

Re: EG33 and Piston Slap?

The engine in my 95 did the same thing from about when it had 110,000 miles until when I sold it. I took it to the dealer for it twice and they suggested that I learn to ignore it.

Re: EG33 and Piston Slap?

my 92' w 275k is in the same boat.....anything below 1000 rpm and you can hear it. Above 1000 you cant hear or feel it. Im curious as to the origin, whether its a rod bearing or piston slap. I tried using some rotella 15w-40 hoping it might help the noise but it didnt. Might try to get a video the noise......Im planning on getting a new shortblock anyway next time SUbaruparts has 15% off, but id like to keep going on the original as much as i can, be great to get 300k on it (just for braggin rights)................

Re: EG33 and Piston Slap?

Thanks guys...

Yeah YT I gave it a new listen...it's maybe 1min, but not a full 2mins.

Sounds like it's piston slap then...I won't get too excited over it.
That said, if it were to give up the ghost I can't complain one bit! 270k & it still runs/drives like a new car!

Stelthsvx yeah, I'm shooting for 300k myself...it had 246k on it when the oem trans went.
