Transmission HELP!

Hi all SVXERS,

I have just spent the day going to many, many AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SPECIALISTS in my area. (Hunter Valley NSW)

ALL of them are claiming my SVX transmission will cost upwards of $3,000 to repair.

This is terrible, as I only paid $10,000 for the car!!!

Does anyone know of another way out of this dilemma, or is it seriously going to cost over $3,000 to fix my tranny????

I would stick with Subaru dealer if possible. Here they have a 2 year-24,000 mile guarantee.

There are a few things that you can do to have a better chance to extend the life of a replacement.

Good luck,
Keith

Re: Transmission HELP!

If you do a search on Ebay, you'll find 2 SVX transmissions available right now. One is ECUtune Subaru Phase I Enhanced 4EAT transmission, SVX, Item
number: 130240939137 totally redone but pricey $3500.00

Or
92-95 Subaru Svx Transmission 3.3 Liter 4wd Auto

* 40k miles from Japan * ( New Jersey )

This one is cheap going for $650.00

Last year I bought a SVX tranny on ebay for $590.00, had it shipped to Canada, turned out it was a factory rebuilt in mint condition. Good luck.

Sorry, I assumed you were in the USA, I just noticed you're in Australia...still wishing you good luck.

What you have to weigh up is if you want to keep the car for some time.
The car is a 92 model that has a transmission that was not perfect and had a number of modifications done on it during the 93/94 years, to rectify most of the shortcomings.

If you just get it rebuilt by xxx Transmission shop for less than Subaru's price, are they going to include the updates, and the modified parts or just replace the clutch plates etc?

If you get Subaru to do it you will end up with a transmission that is equal to the 95/on models that is more suited to the SVX. Plus a warranty.

Otherwise you get a rebuilt 92 model box that still has all the dubious early parts that will fail again.

Harvey.

Re: Transmission HELP!

you could try getting a late model forester turbo auto tranny from an importer maybe ? or go manual there is an 2000 model forester on ebay thats wrecked but the auto should be ok and you could sell bits to recoup some cost if youve got the space and the time, i feel your pain

Re: Transmission HELP!

Harvey is right on! A Subaru dealer is the only way to go.
Been there... done that... Tried to save a few bucks and ended up a few months going to a dealer to get a replacement. 2 year guarantee here. If there is a problem, the dealer loves it! the factory pays them to put another one in and you drive a loaner while it happens!

Avoid Dans_carpets on ebay at all costs.

Hope it all works out for you...

Keith

Could you share your experience with him? His feed back rating on ebay seems to be good?
