Cel #56

CEL #56 says "EGR valve stuck open/closed". I've taken the whole EGR system apart and cleaned things out, there was a lot of carbon build up. Everything seems to work properly but i still get the CEL #56 (even after resetting). The only thing i can think of is the EGR solenoid. Annoyingly enough this is located under the intake between the block and the intake!!! GRRRR .... I'd like to meet the mofo that designed this !!!! Has anybody removed this and tested it ? If so any pointers on how ?

I'd rather not take the whole intake manifold off !!! And yes i was able to remove the EGR components without taken the manifold off !!! HowTo write up coming soon (with pics).

Thanks
RB

PS: Search sux since "egr" doesn't give any matches (which i don't believe for a second), i can't put "cel 56" since 56 is only two characters, there a minimum 3 character requirement !!!

I have nothing to add, but I'd just like to type exhaust gas recirculation in this thread for future searches (I too have searched EGR in the past to no avail)

btw - removing the intake isn't that bad, and in most cases your vacuum lines underneath the intake are brittle and leaking anyway and it would be a good idea to change them out.

How have you cleared the codes?? The Clear process doesn't always work and sometime disconnecting the battery for an hour or so does the trick

I've never been able to clear codes with the wires & plug, i always end up disconnecting the battery as you said.

yep, reset and code still comes back.

The only symptom i have is the CEL coming on. The car runs fine and i get around 25mpg. So i'm guessing the EGR valve is never opening. If it was stuck open the i'd have rough idling etc.

I'm planning on running the car till its warmed up and then watch the EGR valve to see if it opens at all when the throttle is opened up. If it doesn't budge then its probably the solenoid not coming on to let vacuum through to the EGR valve.

Any other thoughts ? Is there a way to test the pressure regulator valve to see if its functioning properly ?

best thing is to hold your finger over the vacuum line that operates the egr valve while testing.. If the vacuum gets there... the valve itself is not. Unless it is a mechanical fault, the solenoid would throw a code for it not functioning properly... So I am on the idea that the valve is stuck... Go out and use your fingers to see if you can break it free, then reset the codes and go from there
