even the new Subaru "Chevy Malibu" grille is much better than the previous va-jay-jay styled grille.

OK. I'm all for the separation of Toyota and Subaru - with you on that one (yay subaru!)

But seriously... Toyota's strong point is their bullet-proof engines. Why in the hell would they stick a Subaru engine in their car?!

Plus, it's hard to really say Toyota influencing other areas of the car would make them worse - have you seen the new STi?! Can Subaru do ANY worse at styling?? I think not.

Way I see it, Subaru has hit rock bottom on styling on almost ALL their vehicles (I kind of like the Legacy still). There's no where to go but up. The scarier prospect is putting a torque-less Toyota engine in a Subaru - sure it'll run forever, but it'll take you that long to get to your destination...

Explain how a Toyota engine is superior to a Subaru engine and I may concede your point.

Toyota is not exactly a power player in this segment of the market right now and the STI is sickeningly popular.

Aside from that, the NEW Camry is the ONLY good-looking car Toyota has. They make as many if not more fugly cars than Subaru ever has. They just have so many cars on the market (along with a rich history) that you don't notice.

Ofcourse I should say "vehicles". They have a lot more engines to sell.

It seems to me though Toyota would rather harness an ej25 to rebirth the GT Four than develop a brand new engine, while giving Subaru their hybrid technology.
I don't want to see a 4 cyl in what may become the B11s, but that may be the easiest route for Subaru to meet the 300+100hp goal they set for it 5 years ago.
I think anyone with the pockets to buy a B11s, if it were to ship with a Toyota powerplant, would rather just go buy a Lexus instead. Putting a Toyota engine in a Subaru shell is completely nonsensical.

both will still get Subie's 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Boxer engines
2.5L and RWD? This is most certainly not a new Alcyone. I'm betting Subaru has something else up their sleeve.
The B11s had sui doors, this sketch is a coupe.

I fully endorse this car as long as it is not badged as Alcyone, or holding up production of what should be the SVXs successor.

I HIGHLY doubt there will ever be another Alcyone. Fuji lost it's proverbial shirt on the SVX. Mostly because of advertising gaffes, and poor marketing. As we all know, the car STILL stands on it's own merits of, power, luxury, and reliability.

What wasn't lost on those counts, was lost to the lack of parts sharing. The XT shared it's chassis & most of it's parts with the humble Loyale. They made money by selling, what was by all accounts a dressed up Loyale, for Sports Coupe money. Had the SVX been a dressed up Legacy, they would have made money on it, by the bucketful. That said, it wouldn't be the wonderful car it is.

Had the Amadeus made production, it would have helped Fuji recoup the costs of the SVX development. As it stands, and if my memory serves, Fuji lost money on the SVX. The first time they EVER lost money on a car.

We can bemoan what could have been, but Fuji's loss is our gain, in exclusivity.

History in this case seems completely irrelevant, especially when they have backing by Toyota. Subaru is fairly popular now and releasing a new flagship probably has a very small chance of being a total loss. There is no reason a new Alcyone can't share parts like a windsheild, door panels, lights, interior with this GT-Four/Supra thing.
I think if the Amadeus were produced it would have been an even bigger loss. It would likely have been more expensive than the SVX, and even less people would want one.

That's pronounced: Higher price for largely the same content but slicker brochures, advertizing, warranty and maybe or maybe not slightly better fit/finish. That I'm not interested in.

I would be interested in a RWD Subie just because they could then move the engine rearward and front wheels forward in the chassis, making it much better balanced. Plus, it could get better mpg. However, that would most likely mean no AWD/4WD option unless they went to a front-mid-engine design, which I think is completely unlikely. Too bad...
This sounds reasonable.

More info - Subaru TBX

stumbed across this info which was sourced out of a Japan spy magazine, listing a shot for new 370 z, Lexus hybirds, Pirus and Subaru TBX and a hint for a SBX (wishing for turbo ez30 may come true - on legacy platform)

Subaru/Toyota TBX Alcyone/SVX

- Product of the Toyota-Subaru alliance. Toyota have announce an FR vehicle based of the Subaru platform. Subaru will benefit from its development in its own model, tentatively titled TBX.
- Subaru may also be considering a 2-door SVX successor by inclusion of a turbo-charged version of its flat-6 EG30 into its current legacy platform- it would require minimal investment on Subaru's part. Currently called the SBX, the car is currently under consideration at the moment, however Subaru is currently concentrating on the TBX and its alliance with Toyota.

In other news...

Some people are indicating (without any formal sources but plenty of press behind it) that Subaru's relationship with Toyota is not all giving and sharing.

Seems to me Subaru needs to bring Kei cars to the US if they want to save them.
I will not buy a rebadged Daihatsu, if only to spite Toyota.
