15 Ottawa winters and.....

This is what the left front hub looks like. That pile of rust on the ground is what's left of the dust shield.

I didn't even have to pry on it, I just grabbed it and pulled, and it fell right off.

Time to start saving for new under car parts...

Wow, that is really ugly. It's been so long since I moved from Michigan, I forgot how bad the salt induced cancer can get.

The problem is, your engine's not leaking enough oil to keep the underside of the car thoroughly lubricated.

That pile of rust on the ground looks about like my GL wagon when I sold it, after three years in Vermont.

I'm glad I moved back to city that uses sand instead of salt. Road salt just sucks the life out of cars.

Oh it is, my subframe and trans cross-member are almost perfect. It just doesn't spray the oil far enough to keep the hubs coated.

A previous owner actually gave it a very good oil spray rustproofing underneath. Most/all of the bolt on underbody parts are rusting, but the only spot of rust on the bottom of the body is where he scraped it over something and scraped away the oil coating.

Actually, I swiped the oil/rustproofing thing from a member here, so I can't take credit for that. I have given the oil leak phenomenon a name, though: The Subaru Passive Underbody Rustproofing System™.

SPURPS.

What if you hooked up a couple of fans to blow the oil off the plastic guard under the engine ...

that should do the trick

The first SVX I tried to buy was an eBay New England car. I'm so glad that deal fell through. That salt is brutal.

Stupid salt...

I just went through a 2 day ordeal of getting a seized caliper slide to move properly again.

I'll go sleep now.

siezed calipar or siezed slider? My sliders siezed up and we got them going again in reading, rear calipars that is. They have since sized up twice since and braking them loose and re-lubricating them only helps a small amount it seems. Takes 2-3 weeks for them to sieze up again. I need me a new set of rear calipars i think.

salt on the raods around here is pretty rough too, but lately we've gotten near no snow, so that's some saving grace for the underside of my cars, however that means less play time
