bought 2 cars this last week (wide bodies)

picked up a clean bone stock 87 Mitsubishi Conquest
80k original miles, rust free az car, runs great.

also picked up a silver 88 version same car
someone had transplanted a Mustang 5.0 carburated
motor into..not a bad job just needs some final work
to make it a nice daily driver.

Over here that model is called the Mitsubishi Starion.

The Japanese like to play on words. It may be a mix of Star and Orion. Native english speakers tend to play on and make jokes about the possibility that they meant to say Stallion.

These cars were not well regarded then, but they sure are now. That car could become a collector's item long before the SVX makes the grade, in classic car terms. It has a lot of raw muscle motoring feel about it, plus the design is harmonious and balanced. A pony car, it really ought to have been called the Stallion.

When our Japanese friends do a good design, one that is not drawn by a committee, they do not miss the mark.

Nice find. A keeper I would say.

Joe

I would own one right now, but alas... I could not put up with the interior. It's just SOOOOOO 1980s, with the 'graph graphic' behind the gauges, I'd just feel like David Hasselhoff everytime I got in it. They sure have a great design though. How much did you pick them up for?

Over here we had both, the Starion and Conquest...
basically the same car with different badging really..

I got the red one for $2500 pictured
and the silver one with the 5.0 needing some
work for $800
Ill have pics of it once I clean it up a little and get
it back on the rd. It needs a ps pump, radiator for
starters and front tires. Body is pretty straight
though.

Dayle,
I've got a radiator in excellent shape (looks new) out of an '87 5.0 Mustang if you need it. Won't fit in my conversion project.

A friend of mine has an 87 and i'm with you on the interior but despite that i would still love to have one. Its just has that agressive look and its a blast to drive.

Basically this is how I see it;

The car was meant to Japan's answer to the Mustang, and what better name than the Stallion? We all know the japanese mix up their r's and l's. Who can blame 'em?

Though, considering the special editions over in japan were the "Starion SIRIUS DASH" (referring to the star itself) You can never help but wonder.

Nice job on the buy though, I've always loved how those things looked.

It should have been Stallion

It's how a lot of people see it.

I know where Kelvin is coming from on the interior. There is one at my local Mitsi garage, you take a step back when you see the interior.

This interior "dates" the car if you want to look at it in that light. However in classic car terms, this is a Good Thing.

One of the nice things about early 'Stangs is the interior, so I would not knock the Starion because of it. One day they will be valuable.

It's called the Starion here too. The Chrystler variant is the conquest. Hah, those cars are awesome. I use to have a 4g63 powered Starion. Sourcing the transmission for that swap is a huge pain in the ass, but it's such a better upgrade to the old clunker in it now.

Wait till you get acquainted with all the different ECUs, lol. Even the seatbelts have their own seperate computer.

My Uncle had an 87 Conquest, black on black leather. 80's interior or not it was a sweet car, but heck, it was the 80's. His now ex-wife's daughter took it out partying while he was out of town back in like 89. You know how in the movies when you hit a fire hydrant and the hydrant breaks off and water shoots up in the air? That really doesn't happen, it splits sexy, sporty cars in half and totals them.
